9. the man was a different style of democrat
but countless families looked at him and his city's many patronage-riddled departments with great respect. my dad got his city job the old fashioned way: getting out the vote; rousting the winos on madison street and making sure they voted; collecting payments for the alderman. if you could benefit someone with power at the precinct level in some way, they could magically move your place in line to the front.

there's still plenty of older people who will point out to you that "richie ain't his old man."
