Yup, a lot of people think manners and civility are not necessary on the Internet. Fuck 'em is right.

10. Indeed. Something like ...
Milkensghost: Article 9 is the single most important code in human history in terms of expanding commerce in this country and indeed around the world. No business could be done without secured transactions.

Friedmanisgod: Screw that, penny stock sniffer. Secured transactions existed before article 9 and you dont have to have a degree from Wharton to know that Article 5 is the big dog of commerce. 99% of the major transactions that go down today rely on letters of credit.

Bernankeshomeboy: You lame ass derivative douchebags have no clue. GATT is where its at.

Milkensghost: Shut up you wedge stock bottom feeder. We are talking about the UC freakin C.

12. Never been to a UCC church. Have been to a CoC church....
And to quite a few Pentecostal churches....

My favorite Christian denomination though, I must say, is the Episcopalian/Anglican church. All of the ritual, none of the guilt! That, and compared to my Southern Baptist upbringing, Bible study seems so much more... I dunno... intellectual there.

I'm proud of my mother, she got confirmed in the Episcopal church and is very active there, overcoming her years of Southern Baptist indoctrination.

19. Methodists are problematic for me because of their stand on glbt issues.
I don't understand it, but they're pretty consistent in their pronouncements. Too bad, too...

22. blame it on the African and Latin American Bishops. We do.
Our church and conference just hosted the Quadrennial General Conference.

Once again ordination of non-hetero ministers was brought up
Once again it was defeated, by a lesser margin than 4 years ago
It will be brought up again in 4 years, 8 years. It will never be dropped from the agenda.

The time may come when the African UMC becomes its own organization, and then outcomes will be different. Until then that large united block of votes will keep the Book of Discipline right where it is concerning ordination and marriages. The delegations from the conserverative conferences in the USA combined with the African block pretty much seals it.

The deal is, won't ordain, won't consecrate marriages, until Gen Conf votes to change the Book of Discipline. It took a long long time to get women ordained, FWIW, but now we have female Bishops.

Won't turn you away as a member however, most large UMC congregations would be fairly accepting. I know of one church locally that would probably not be..that is one extreme. Our congregation (by far the largest in the Conference) is at the other extreme.

Methodists are like Democrats...we have a BIG umbrella. And we do have some really nice rituals. I tell recovering Catholics all the time that they would feel pretty comfortable in our church because we have a nice ritual and order of worship similar enough to theirs that they wouldn't feel weird.

Anglican/Episcopalians around here are way off to the right by the way. WAY WAY WAY off to the right, and threatening to schism themselves over it. They really do have their knickers in a twist over it.

23. We had a discussion about that when kevsand and I got married.
We got married in a Methodist church and we had to go thru three "pre-marital counseling" sessions. We had managed to dodge all the expected minefields (given who and what we both are) until we got to the third session and the minister asked what role the church would play in our marriage.

Kev looks sideways at me and slides his chair away just a tiny bit like he's expecting a lightening bolt at any second.

I tell the minister the Methodist church will probably play NO role in our marriage. He asks why not. I then explained to him that I would be happy to join any congregation that shares my views fully and that the Methodist church does not. He won't let it go and asks what subjects I have differences with the church.

I take a deep breath and forge ahead (expecting my wedding to be canceled at any second) and I explain to him that I have serious issues with ANY church that won't allow Gay or Lesbian clergy. I tel him that I don't figure straight folks have any clearer hotline to God than anyone else.

I then go on to discuss gay marriage (remember, this was 1995 when the subject was not as common.) I go on to tell him that it is my personal opinion that love is a gift that should be celebrated whenever anyone is lucky enough to find it, and that it is absolutely wrong-headed of churches to limit it to selected "pre-approved" couples.

The minister listens to me and says he agrees with me, and that maybe one day we'll live to see that day, but that for the moment the church had not caught up to us yet. He then changes the subject to our musical selections for the wedding...

:)

18. Some jerk calling himself "queer mullah".
who apparently is well-loved over there. Whereas, I only drop by occasionally. At this point, I've devolved into a whiny crybaby wanting someone to at least agree with me that he's an asshole. It's clear they're not going to. So, I need to just take a break. Damn site doesn't have an ignore option.

It's the "liberation theology" thread in the Theology Forum.
