Poll question: Lamest James Bond film title?
I grant that the second lamest film title in the history of cinema is much less lame than The Phantom Menace, but if you had to pick the lamest of the James Bond film titles, which would it be?

I have to confess that the title Quantum of Solace sounds to me like something conceived by two film students who were trying to out-pretentious each other.

2. Who can tell me what 'Quantum of Solace' means?
I think it's an anagram of something.

4. Ah! If that's the case, it becomes slightly less pretentious
Hmm... "Fun macaque stool."

Not sure if that's what I Her Majesty's top secret agent investigating.

12. Quantum, used correctly, is "smallest part"; in ignorant common usage, it means "GINORMOUS!! zOMG!!"

So, it's hard to tell whether the writers of the screenplay mean the title to mean "The teeniest bit of solace possible" or "GREAT BIG FUCKING IGNORANT AMERICAN HUGE QUANTITIES OF SOLACE!!!!! ZOMG!!!!!!!!"

Solace, by the way, means to comfort or to console.

I could see a Bond film going either way - either that it's that Bond really gets little comfort or consolation in life, since he has such a difficult and dangerous job, or that he maybe is going to out taking revenge and blowing the shit out of bad guys, and that gives him mega-stupid-American-quantities of comfort and consolation.

And since I imagine this is a film about taking revenge for the killing of Vesper -- well, it could still be taken either way. I hope they are using it in the proper way, and not the obese Dorito-stuffing American stupid way.

13. It was the title of a short story by Ian Fleming
Fleming being a gin-soaked Brit rather than a Dorito-stuffed Yank, you can be sure he used it properly.

15. I hadn't realized that! I'm sure he's using it correctly, then,
because I don't think the bogus ignorant version really started being used until the "Quantum Leap" TV show era.

And I love the comparison of the gin-soaked Brit versus Dorito-stuffed Yank.

"I have to confess that the title Quantum of Solace sounds to me like something conceived by two film students who were trying to out-pretentious each other. "

It does make sense if you saw the last movie and understand the meaning of the two words, quantum and solace, and how that fits into how Bond felt about Vesper.

and I still think it is a bit odd...

5. I saw it, and I understand what they mean
But it's still kind of heavy-handed. "Requiem for a Dream" struck me much the same way.

9. Octopussy
Yeah, the new one sounds all pretentious and shit, but Octopussy totaly lacks subtlety. Always thought it was offensive, not because of the 'pussy' thing... but because whoever came up with it thought it was 'cool' or 'cute' or whatever... and it's just fucking dumb!
