They're making Rendezvous With Rama?
The horror!

I really hate to think what they are planning to do with this rather cerebral novel. Losts of CGI and explosions, I assume.

What are the odds that it will not suck? I'm laying 3:1 odds.

12. That includes intelligent classic science fiction
I personally think that most literature translates poorly to film but with SF, there seems to be much greater disparity between its print and visual forms.

13. And that image right there is proof that the last three or four Trek movies didn't actually happen.
Seriously. It's all in Picard's head. Which makes more sense... that Picard and Kirk were both somehow able to transcend space and time by sheer force of will, or that this thing that makes you live out your dreams let Picard meet someone who was quite likely an idol of his in his youth, and have an adventure alongside him and then save the world. Then once that dream was over, he moved on to the next one... getting back at the Borg. Then the next one... then the next one.

It's all in his head.

20. Ooooooh yes it can!
Granted I read the book a loooooong time ago, but isn't Rendezvous With Rama mostly a bunch of people sitting around going, "Hmmm...what do you think it might be?"

Other than the last line in the book there is no real payoff in this story. And even that line was kinda short-story hokie-ish.

I'm thinking of the right book...right?

A classic sci-fi story, turned into a horrible movie by people who didn't understand the story one whit.

25. IMDB says that Morgan Freeman is in it, and it's directed by David Fincher.
Freeman is the only actor listed so far.

Fincher did Se7en, Fight Club, and Zodiac. I've not seen the latter, but the other two are, IMO, incredibly well done movies.

This one might actually work.

Of the three writers listed, two have no other writing credits, and the other has credits for two episodes of Band of Brothers, and has a TV something or other coming out next year, and is writing the screenplay for a superhero movie about Marvel's Shang-Chi.

26. Morgan Freeman has been involved in getting this to the screen for years.
It's good to hear they have finally gotten the green light or funding or whatever it was holding them back.

As I recall, Freeman was waiting, too, for the CGI technology to catch up to what was needed to make this film possible. I don't know if they will still do the idea of "mapping" human faces onto CGI bodies anymore or just go with large green-screens, but with him involved, you can be sure it will be an intelligent retelling of the book.

I am curious: did fans of Clarke the world over groan collectively at the knowledge of The Sentinel being put to film, too? ;)

30. Bad example
2001: A Space Odyssey bore little resemblance to The Sentinel. And Clarke wrote both.

Are you implying that 'Rama' requires similar drastic changes (expansion) in order to be cinematic? And if you do, who's going to write it?

I've got a bad feeling about this.

32. I'm implying that every time someone proposes to turn a famous book into a film
the fans let out a collective groan. Or at least those that don't think any of their beloved books should be put to film in any way, shape or form.

I've read both 2001 and The Sentinel and I feel they bore a basic main theme and resemblance (that of an overseeing race guiding our evolution) for Clarke to turn the latter into the former and for Kubrick to turn it all into a masterpiece of a film. Given the right director, writer(s) and actors Rama could become a masterpiece of a film, too. Besides, you can always ignore the film if you don't like it. I do the same with the remakes of The Haunting and Solyaris. At the very least, a new generation will read the book and make up their minds for themselves.

37. Josh Hartnett and Carrie Underwood are slated to star, as well.
Just kidding. But you just know they're wanting to do something just as boneheaded.

Rendezvous with Rama is one of my favorite books of all time. I liked the Lord of the Rings books too, and those movies turned out surprisingly good. Maybe there's a ray of hope for this project.

28. ACC really liked Morgan Freeman, and I believe
he thought MF had done a great job translating the novel for the screen. Who knows how it will end up after being shot, edited, etc., but ACC was cool with the script (ACC was a family friend, which is how I know this).

33. That great!
And pretty cool :)

I have a good feeling about this and always have ever since reading that Freeman was going to be making it with his own production company. He's one of the greatest actors in recent decades and should have the respect from the film community to get all the right people for the job. If ACC liked Freeman's rewriting, then I doubt much more could go wrong. Or, I don't feel it will. Freeman would likely pull the plug before it got too out of whack anyway.

the sequels will be very divergent from the books, regardless of how faithful, unlikely as that may be, the first one is. At least in terms of the relationships between the characters.
