Unbelievable reckless driving!!
Almost every night my wife and I and our two kids take our dog for a walk. To set this story up, I need to mention that our neighborhood has lots of hills.

So last week we are at an intersection ready to cross the street when a BMW full of teenage girls comes flying down the street (and down a huge hill). The speed limit in our neighborhood is 30mph and they must have been going at least 50 to 55 mph. They run the stop sign of the intersection we are standing at, and when they hit the bottom of this hill, they go airborn!! I watch as the car leaves the road and flies about 6 car lengths; it hits the street so hard that a hubcap flies off and sparks are flying everywhere. The girl driving manages to stop the car further down the next hill and I see three teenage girls get out. One of the girls is crying hysterically. They are about 100 yards from me and as I start walking down the hill to chew their asses out, they see me, get in the car and drive away. I did not get the license plate number.

If we had been in the middle of the intersection, those girls would have probably killed all of us as we were sitting ducks, and there is no way that we would have been able to get out of the way.

This happened last week and I get more and more pissed off every time I think about it. I am also pissed that I didn't get the Lic. plate number so I could report these fucking idiots.

1. I'll say the unpopular thing: 18 is a good age for getting a driver's license.
I should not have had a DL when I was 16, nor should many of my friends have had one at that age. I've become convinced that DL and car at 16 is, in general, maybe not such a good idea, but probably a necessity in a country as large and, in many places, rural as ours.

Here, it's 18 to even take the theory and practical exams, and driving lessons administered by a state-certified instructor are practically required. (The written test can have any of up to 800 questions, and the driving exam is an hour-long ordeal that many, many people fail.)

Flamesuit at ready.

2. No flaming from me...I agree with you.
What I saw these girls do was unbelievable to me. They did not even slow down at the stop sign.

If we, (or another car) had been in the middle of that intersection, somebody would have been killed for sure.

5. It is far too easy to get a driver's license in this country.
I like the way European countries do it; it is generally much tougher. But we have this sense of entitlement here; we think driving is a right (well a lot of times it is a necessity) but it is really a privilege, a privilege that should be taken away for more infractions.

In the OP's case, a the cost for what they did should be a temporary loss of license. I am in favor of losing a license for almost any serious infraction, like speeding or running a stop light. Bottom line is that we collectively need to take driving more seriously.

6. Yep, I got mine at 16 a promptly lost it after two accidents and three tickets for various things
Problem is that there are lots of folks who don't care whether or not they HAVE a license. Once they start driving (no matter how many times their license is taken away or for what reason) they just keep driving.

7. Agreed, we'd be better off if the universal age for everything was 18.
I've read studies that show our motor skills are crap at 16-17 years of age.

11. it has nothing to do with age
it has to do with maturity.

Some people can be 25 and have the maturity of a 14-year-old.

3. I could support a power-limit system for age groups

Too many teens shouldn't be driving hot cars, like the higher-performance BMWs. It's just as stupid as first-time motorcyclists hitting the road on 1200cc monsters, instead of working their way up from 250s.

My 210hp car caught me off guard a few times in my mid 20s.

10. Ah yes, this reminds me of a saying in Motorcycle groups...
always avoid the rider of a gixxer 1000, it is a notorious squid bike...

Everytime I see one of those it is always being driven by a doucheie looking guy wearing flip flops, a t-shirt, and shorts. Lately, add a helmet on a hook on the back of the bike (NOT on the riders head) to complete the look...

Stay as far away as possible. I want to know something though, how in the hell do you shift with flip flops on? That has got to be hell on your foot.

4. Kids in a Beamer
Teenagers and pricey sports cars are a poor mix. Seems to be partly the car and partly the way the kids were brought up. Seen cases where not much more speed than that earned the kids a trip in a helicopter, right after we cut them out of the car.

Hopefully they learned something and won't go doing it again. It could have been so much worse though, I'm glad you got lucky.
