What potential bad theoretical side effects would there be if...
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 04:40 PM by jasonc
I theoretically, used some generic speaker cable as an FM Antenna?

Might, say after 20 or so minutes, the sound begin to drop out and get very staticy?

Would I, theoretically of course, hurt anything? Or should I get my theoretical lazy ass to the store to buy a real FM antenna cable...

9. Roy Hinkley was NOT an English professor!
In fact, he wasn't even a professor--just a high school teacher. (According to the wiki.)

14. You do that...
and the Gilligan's Island Brigade (aka The Little Buddies) will hunt you down and spend 180 minutes shoving coconuts in your orifices. A three-hour tour...of pain! Guest-starring the Harlem Globetrotters.

Actually I made that up. They probably wouldn't do that.

I did not think of that, who needs the Large Hydron Collider, when you can just use speaker cable as an FM antenna instead for HUGE amounts less money...

good thinking.

11. Any insulated wire is fine, just strip the insulation on the end connedted to the radio.
If the reception is poor, move the wire around to improve it,also more wire, better reception.

12. Thats what I did
thinking it would work, at least temporarily, and then 20-30 minutes in, the reception went to hell. We were having a storm at the time, so I just turned it off nad tried later, same result. I tested another radio and it was fine, so I assume that either the FM tuner on this radio is bad, or the cable is not working right.

I guess it is narrowed down to a bad FM tuner now...

Damn...

13. I'd say, theoretically, you should go for it.
The worst that could happen is you get a tangle in the wire. Theoretically speaking, of course. Good luck! :hi:

18. It's FM, it's going to sound like shit no matter what.
I don't see the point in paying extra for a good antenna to carry a signal that is, by definition, not that great.

Your signal shouldn't degrade over time, unless an obstacle gets in the way, the station reduces power in some hours, etc. Waves still move in the same way, and your cable/antenna will take years for wear and tear to have any effect on sound quality.

19. You have a good point
I guess I was hoping that it was the cable and not the tuner itself causing the problems...

:sigh:

20. It's just that FM signal isn't that great.
A good tuner and decent cabling will make the most of the signal you get, but they can't make up for poor signal. It's just GIGO.

I promise I never will.

I would never spend that on a tuner. It seems crazy to do so considering the source.
