Is it the idiot gene at work or simple teenaged shenanigans?
#3 son has been wanting something he calls a 'bull ring'. Said procedure has been denied him until he's older (16-18 range...he turned 14 a few months back). #3 son wandered upstairs early this afternoon with this ring in his nose. A ring with a nut hanging off it. He was asked to take it off (I figured it was just a fake -- he does that from time to time to see if I'll take the bait). He grinned and reached up to do it...and he'd tightened the ring too much and it wouldn't budge.

Took him 5 minutes to put it on. 3 1/2 hours and a lot of eye-watering (not to mention vegetable oil, butter, ice and, finally, two pairs of pliers) to get it off.

And we call his brother 'bonehead'.

1. I'm so glad my kids are grown-up....
their teen years gave me gray hair.

Good luck.

13. We've gotten one through...
three are between 14-19 and one more is waiting in the wings. I'm slowly but surely losing my mind.

2. Is the dad a trophy husband?
Genes are thought to play an important role in intelligence.

6. Judging from her writings, it didn't seem like she needed one.

8. I strongly suspect that her income was higher than his.
Also, they met because she introduced herself to him because she liked the way he looked.

9. You aren't seriously suggesting Ayn Rand as a role model?

3. I have a roommate with one of those.
This couple shares a room in the house I live in.

They're really into punk music and she has one of those bull rings in her nose.

I think those rings are stupid and make people look completely unattractive.

Then again, I never understood the fascination with tattoos and piercings.

14. This kid
thinks that punk is the best thing since Santa Claus. But that's right now. That's why he has to wait before he can get the bull ring for real. What he thinks is great at 14, my guess is, ain't gonna be so hot by the time he's 18.

I'm also guessing that as much as it hurt to take out the fake one -- he might be a little soured on getting a real one.

At least this week.

7. I tell the ones with nose rings
That's how you lead a 1000 lb bull around with just a strong string tied to the ring. He won't pull away because it hurts too much. Doing this voluntarily is just stupid.

17. He got a taste of how much it hurts...
just a taste, though. Hopefully it'll be enough to teach him a lesson.

11. Idiot gene, by a mile. That's just fucking stupid, and SO pointless that even WE
(my moronic friends and I, back in the Sixties) wouldn't have done it.

And we had all those GOOD drugs, and even so that's idiocy beyond which we would not have gone.

that they think this shit is 'cool'?

It's just...beyond me. All's I can do is shake my head and hand him the peroxide and the Q-tips.

20. I don't understand why, though.
I mean...what's the point? It hurts and then you go around looking like you need a tissue for the next...well...until it's out.

23. i honestly have no idea
i could give you some crap about teenage rebellion, but it's pretty mainstream and not so rebellious anymore.

part of me wants to think it's got something to do with asserting control over their body at a time when they feel so out of control in regards to it. but that's only a small part of me. maybe it's more to push the limits with parents and shock them
