I have HAD IT with my Lab/Rottweiler.
Lately he has been completely unabashed about stealing food. He has PLENTY of food of his own. Good food. Canidae, Chicken Soup, often feed him wet food too and still you can't turn your back on him for a SECOND without him stealing your food or getting into the garbage. I locked him out of the house. He just jumped up on the sliding door and whined till I said screw this and I locked him in the kennel tonight - in three years we've always let him come in and out of the house, never chained him up, never stuck him in the kennel - but lately he has just become insufferable and I have no clue why it happened. I had him checked for worms. Other than that I have no idea why the sudden change but it is completely unacceptable. I'm really just not sure what to do about it.

1. I gotta say... I spanked Bailey tonight
So I was sitting on the couch eating my pasta, and I dropped my fork.

I bend over to pick it up, so it's not on the floor.

That little fucker IMMEDIATELY scarfs half my pasta WHILE I'M HOLDING IT.

Yeah he got a smack on the butt, and yeah I'd do it again.

That's MY pasta, ya little shit.

Damn.

2. Chicken Soup? For a Lab/Rottweiler? --- He's HUNGRY!! Get some meat and bones for him!!
Feed him!!

And sounds like he wants, not only 'real' food, but also attention.

Have you been away a lot?

3. One of my cats used to do that.
Kept getting in the garbage no matter what I did. I propped a chair in front of the cabinet under the sink, and he found a way to rock the chair out of the way.

One day I lost it big time. I chased the cat all around the house. Up stairs, under beds. I threw a matress off its stand to get him, yanked a sofa away from the wall. Swatted him every time I got within reach and screamed my lungs out the whole time. My spouse thought I'd lost my mind.

So did the cat. He never got in the garbage again.

4. If he doesn't have any other major behavioral problems...
I'd say he's a pretty good dog. I hope you and your dog resolve the problem.

5. Have you had his thyroid checked?
Hyperthyroidism causes ravenous hunger.
