So, I spoke to a former coworker tonight
A guy from Ireland I worked with since 2001 until fall of last year... he works for the only company (in my field) that has survived the economic downturn (although, they're apparently starting to hit the wall themselves, finally..) and I still love the guy, and have great respect for him and his opinion.

Anyhow, I got back in touch with him a week+ ago about joining his company, and meeting up for beers. So, chatting tonight (and struggling to understand him without reading his lips - damn my deafness!) was a good time (I miss him) but I also learned some, kinda bad news.

1. As I mentioned, they're finally starting to hit the wall on the downturn. They're not only not hiring, but starting to lay off their spring hires.

2. When we first started contacting again, he immediately suggested I send my resume to the son of the company's founder, AND mention him, and two other former coworkers specifically as references (some of the plethora of people I used to work with at one point or another, that are working there). One of the two I have high regard for, and consider him one of my two mentors in this business. I've done great work for him, and I know that I've in kind, taught him a lot about some things he didn't know prior to meeting me (SurvCadd and Civil Engineering).

Anyhow, I learned tonight, that (according to the former coworker I called) my former "mentor" doesn't like me. I knew he didn't like me, but I feel confidant he'd recognize the good work I did for him, and also the knowledge I passed on to him... and as such, I didn't think he'd give the bad opinion.

To be fair, he didn't shoot me down entirely - he actually praised me, but only as a bottom of the rung worker in our biz, and kinda sneering at me as a whole.

I'm guessing I shouldn't list him along with the other former coworkers that were listed as "must mention" on my cover letter.
