How many Starbucks are closing in your area?
Baton Rouge is losing a bunch of them- 9 stores.

I feel bad for the people who will lose their jobs, but since I patronize a local shop it's not going to affect me much.

8. And it doesn't mention any in MS. The news this morning said
6 were shutting down in my area.

6. I always thought Starbucks had a burnt taste
I probably notice it mostly because I tend to drink either straight espresso or a cafe americano.

I do have a Starbucks travel mug but I have it filled at a local stand.

7. I find it bitter, too...
but the biggest reason I didn't go there was to support a local shop.

12. I was going to post about Starbucks today--someone explain it to me!
Edited on Fri Jul-18-08 04:33 PM by mycritters2
I went to Starbucks for the first time today. I know, I'm completely out of touch with the culture. So shoot me. Actually, I went through the drive-thru a couple of times last winter for hot chocolate, but I digress.

I got a tomato-basil ciabatta and an iced tea. First, when I ordered the iced tea, the guy looked at me liked I'd ordered deep--fried armadillo and said "You mean cold?" It's 90 degrees with 70% humidity. Yes, I wanted cold iced tea. So, he rings it up and the whole thing--cold, prepackaged sandwich, and cold iced tea--comes to $9.10. $9.10!! Geez, there's a recession on, people!!

Then it takes like forever to make the iced tea, so I go to sit down. There are 4 or 5 tables, and not one of them is clean. I was the only customer in the place, so it's not like they were too busy to clean the tables. So, I go back to the counter and ask for a cloth to wipe a table with. In many restaurants, that would shame the staff into actually wiping the tables themselves. Not in the land of $4.00 cold iced tea. Instead, the guy tosses a cloth across the counter at me and I go off to wipe my own table. So much for dropping anything in the barrista's tip jar.

I sit down and unfold my newspaper, when he brings me my iced tea. I ordered iced black tea, nothing else. Yet, somehow, I taste sweetened tea. I look at the label on the glass and it says "black iced tea lemonade blend". So, I head back to the counter and ask for iced tea. He again looks quite puzzled and asks, "No sweetener at all?". "No", say I, "just iced tea." I go back to sit down with my cold, pre-packaged sandwich and wait again for my iced tea. This time it is what I actually ordered, which was refreshing.

Then my phone rings. It's my brother, and I try to hold a brief conversation with him. But the very cool jazz saxophone was blasting so loudly I could barely hear him, and ask him to call again later.
And I finish my lunch and leave, completely unimpressed, and wondering what all the excitement is about.

Seriously, what is it people love about this place? I intend not to waste my time or my money on "the Starbucks experience" again. Someone explain it to me.

But there were 10 of them within a 10 or 15 minute drive. Not including the downtown ones (three)

16. 5 statewide, 3 on O'ahu -- 2, you guessed it, across the street from each other!
The one inside the Borders at Ward Centre AND the one inside the luxury condo across the street are on the chopping block.

The next nearest one is next to the movieplex, one full block down. Oh, the humanity! :sarcasm:

18. Fuck if I care, except for the people losing jobs. I have a percolator in my kitchen, and
it produces the kind of coffee I like (the consistency and strength of driveway sealer), so I don't go to Starbucks.

And that place is just WAY too precious for my taste anyway.

19. I don't drink coffee, and I've only been in a Starbucks once.
That was enough for me.

Sorry for those losing jobs, and smaller shops run out of business.

23. 57 in Texas statewide. However, I buy coffee at local places.
There are many local coffee places here in Austin that survived the onslaught of Starbucks. There is a large "buy local" current in Austin. :)

If we have more than 28 of those stores in MN, count me surprised. It's like they're pulling out of here faster than Al Bundy...

27. The one that's one block east is closing....
The one two blocks west is staying, the one two blocks south is staying, the one on the opposite corner from that one is closing, the one a block north is closing, the one downstairs will stay, the one three blocks west--I don't know.

Actually I made that all up. I don't know if any of them are closing or staying, but seriously, anyone with half a brain could see this coming.
