New single malt night: "Isle of Jura"
Had never heard of it, but decided it needed to be a scotch night.

First impressions: cool looking bottle. That's rarely a good sign.

Nose: Hey, this could be promising. Smoky.

First sip: Wood. Peat. Lips a-tingly. It's a keeper!

Updates to follow. I plan to do exhaustive research this evening. ;)

1. I just finished a bottle of the stuff
It's very nice, but I have some others to finish before I get more.

:toast:

2. Lowland scotch, I presume?
Some people prefer the less peaty highland stuff. Can't understand 'em, myself.

5. Nope, Island malt
Nice and smoky (from the peat smoked malt), sorta medicinal, hints of leather, iodine.

Not as strong as a laphroaig or ardbeg. Ya either love em or hate em.

3. We tasted that a couple of months ago
at the single malt club I belong to. It was well received. At the moment, I am working my way through a bottle of Cardhu. I bought it last week because it is going to be, or has been discontinued. It also is good, in a mild way.

All single malts have something to recommend them. And they are all good. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:9

6. Cardhu is discontinued?!?!?!?
Wife and I visited the distillery a few years back, it's her favorite. I had no idea it was being discontinued. What a shame.

I still have a quaich from that distillery, I sometimes drink from it.

8. Wow, that sucks - that's good Scotch
I haven't bought any in a long time, since I like to experiment, but that's a pretty good scotch, especially for the price.

9. Yes - they will be re-issuing it under a different name - sometime
in the future. I'm trying to remember why. Has something to do with not enough put down in the last ten years to sustain demand I think. But they do plan to reintroduce it but it won't be the same.

Lagavulin, which is one I just loooove because it has so much smoke, is also in very low supply.

The various distillers did not foresee the huge increase in demand for single malts and therefore didn't put down enough to satisfy that increase. The guy that runs our club tells us that many single malts will be much harder to find over the next few years. Booooo.

10. So it's a good idea to start stocking up now?
Before the prices go up, eh?

Thanks for the head's up on the Lagavulin - my bottle is almost spent, so perhaps I should go get another one. And when I looked at a bottle last weekend, I bnoticed it was about 5-7 bucks more than I had paid for it last year.

11. That's what I'm going to do......
At each payday - I'm going to go and buy Lagavulin, and another Cardhu, and then any other single malt that is rare and getter rarer. Is rarer a word? Not sure. As long as I don't drink it right away, I should have quite the collection in a few months.

17. What other ones are becoming more rare?
And no, rarer isn't a word, but I toally understand what you mean, and given the emergency situation that we might have about scotch, I don't care about proper English.

What other Scotches should be a I worried about, in terms of becoming rarer?

20. Older Laphroaigs and older Ardbegs.
10 year olds are fairly plentiful. But the older ones are not. I'll do a little more research of my club minutes and get you a list.

Nice to know there are other scotch drinkers in the world.

Last week the club tasted a 30 year old Ardbeg. Oh it was so good. But that is the beauty of the club. None of us would ever pay the kind of money that a 30 yo costs. But in the club we pay 140.00 per year and there is 40 of us. So we always get to taste whiskies that I would never be able to afford. :D

21. Nice!
The club is a good idea, indeed!

I've love to try a 30 year scotch.

And if you can get more info, that will be most awesome and excellent of you.

13. Oooh, same here
Love Lagavulin.

Been drinking alot of Speysides lately (because they've been bought for me and I never say no to free scotch).

Course, if I had a job, and my druthers, it'd be 18 y/o Macallan and Glenmorangie forever. No question. Shame it's as expensive as it is.

16. Anyone remember Loch Dhu?
It was a black scotch. They used burned (not just charred) oak casks. The stuff was black as tar.

Not particularly great (although better than most blends)but it was GREAT in eggnog at Christmas. $26 a bottle. Miss that stuff.

Course, it was around before the birth of my first kid, when the wife was working (as was I), and I had 35 bottles of single malt in my collection. Those days are gone forever :-(

18. Is that not around any more? I actually had a bottle,
and drank it over the course of a year or so. Unless it was something else...since you mention you had it a long time ago, and my bottle was just a couple years ago.

As you say, it wasn't particularly great, but it was good, and a nice, for lack of a better term, diversion once in a while.

Oh, I just remebered - the black Scotch I had was called Tamdhu.
