Who DIDN'T go away to college?
Hi, everyone. I often hear adults drone off on how leaving for college is a necessary path to individuation. Looking at the behavior of the plethora of Long Island kids at my school, I've learned not to buy the idea myself. Nevertheless, this notion of dormitory life as a means for character growth is prevalent in our society. So I'm interested to see how many DUers- who enrolled at college at some point in their lives- stayed home. I'm entering my senior year at the University at Buffalo, but I still haven't left my mother's house. My sister and I were raised in a very close family, and continuing to help them, and vice versa, takes precedence over adjourning to a college out of state. I don't drink or party anyway.

So who stayed at home: whether it be due to familial obligation, financial contraints, or for some other reason?

1. I stayed home
And went to school in Detroit. Mainly because I didn't get accepted at any out of town schools. It was good to go to school in the real world while having a job and everything.

2. I went to school here in town
Got my undergrad and grad degrees here. Lived with my parents during my undergrad and then got married while working on my undergrad all while working. Got my masters several years later. I don't see the big deal.

3. I went away at 17, but not to college.
Then I came home at 20 and went to college locally. But I lived in an apartment and not at home.

4. sorta
I go to college three hours away from home, although I come back home every summer. I probably should've stayed at college and taken summer school classes, but I like the small town I live in, and enjoy spending time with my parents.

5. I had to stay home
we could not afford (supposedly) for me to go away. However, my father did not think that being a girl I should even GO to college but my mother talked him into it since I would meet a nice boy there and quit anyway. I was able to learn how to drive, another thing girls did not need to learn, and spent the money I could to get a car. That way I was able to work a lot of jobs and got the hell out of my house as fast as I could. BTW, I didn't meet that nice boy until I was 28. Get out on your own when you can. Your parents have been kind to help you, they probably love having you there but it does make a difference when you learn to live on your own.

6. I Didn't
I was a commuter. I graduated highschool early, so i was only 16 when i started college. I didn't feel like i wanted to move away, but figured i would later.

But, the small to medium private Uni i went to (about 20 miles away) had such a good reputation for their school of sciences, that i saw no value of moving to a different school later. When i graduated, i was still not yet quite 20 y/o, so i still didn't move away. I started working and going to grad school which was close to where i worked. (About 40 miles away.) Then i met my wife to be, so didn't want to move anywhere, at least until we got married.

Things worked out pretty well for me, but sometimes i wonder how much i might have enjoyed going somewhere else to school. But, i'm not much of a regret guy, so i don't really worry about it.

9. school
I went to a Methodist college in my hometown. Walked to school. That was back in the dark ages when a semester cost $90. Of course that was big money then.

I never went to college - couldn't afford it. I couldn't get loans because my dad made too much money (what's up with that? It's not like he GAVE ME ANY). I enlisted in the military. I can't figure out what it is they teach in college. I work in a professional environment and constantly have to correct the spelling and grammar of my coworkers, ALL of whom are "college-educated". And if someone says "it gives you experience with lots of people", PLEASE. I am a veteran AND a GI brat.

My dad was a meteorologist, four of my brothers are: accountant, systems analyst, McDonald's magager, international travelers check salesman, and NONE of us went to college.

14. I stayed home as well.
Went to Northwestern University, which is 5 or 6 miles from home. Drove there everyday, and had a job in downtown Chicago to help pay some of the bills. (I graduated in 1971 when the tuition was a laughable by today's standards $2,800 a year). Food at home was better than the dorms, and I would never have joined a sorority -- for reasons other than the expense.
