Just got power back here a couple hours ago. Over 24 hours without power.
We had an AWFUL storm that blew through the Omaha area. We had up to 90 mph winds yesterday when the storm came through. No Tornado touchdowns, and it was described more like a hurricane. Two deaths due to a tree falling on their car while they were driving during the storm. ;-(

Damage to my house is moderate. A tree snapped in half and fell against the house, and tore out my gutters, roof, and some of the siding. One big stump broke my front gate, and thus allows my sneaky dog to get out. I have someone coming here tomorrow to cut up the heavy tree and fix the fence. But fortunately no breakthrough into the house itself.

The worst? Going without power for over 24 hours! No A/C, no phone, no Internet or TV (no politics), and NO COFFEE!!! And my bed and pillows are a stink pod because I sweat to death all last night without A/C.

I confess, I am spoiled rotten when it comes to the things we take for granted, like electricity. I am just now learning about the gravity of the storm and that most of the area lost power, if not their roof or entire homes. I was in a news blackout and just now hearing it from relatives who kept trying to contact us.

Anyone else from the Omaha area, or heard the news? Did it go national?

And, oh shit, it's raining again! :scared:

1. Ugh! I hate when that happens! Especially when it's hot
and it's summer and ... I guess losing the electric heat in winter would be worse though!

I'm glad you got your power back! I hate losing the power too!

Glad to hear you didn't suffer any damage to your house too! Whew! Close call!

What? No coffee shops near you? I guess all the businesses lost power too?

Welcome back to life!! ;)

3. I did have some moderate damage to the house, but
nothing as serious as I am finding out now to others in the area. Some people lost a roof, or entire parts of the house that make it impossible to stay there.

moving all across the country for the last month!! Pretty scary one's too, with lots of
lightening and high winds, not to mention rain. They come up out of nowhere it seems. :scared:

---------

My son and his girlfriend are here on vacation and they took me out for lunch yesterday in Boston at a restaurant
across from the Prudential Center and it was a sunny hot humid day and then suddenly a T-Storm came roaring
through and we ran inside and the tables out side and the umbrella's blew over and it was so loud and flashing
lightening and raining in torrents and look what happened right across from us!!

:scared:

Catching lightning -- in a camera

When the storm hit this afternoon, Marissa Piette went to a window in her office in the Back Bay, pointed her camera at the Prudential Center, pushed the button on it halfway down -- and waited.

"I'm from the Midwest so I've seen my fair share of big storms. I've tried to catch lightning on film before, but I've never been able to," said the 21-year-old University of Nebraska student, who is interning at a public relations firm.

This time it worked. She said she thinks lightning hit the Prudential three times, and she caught it twice on her Olympus Stylus 710.

2. yeah, CNN covered the storm a while ago, and said there
is more unstable weather ahead. Though apparently the Olympics swimming trials in Omaha are going ahead tomorrow.

Glad you're OK, and that the house is OK. We were without power years ago in Hurricane Isabel; was out for 5 days. After the storm blew thru and we saw the house was OK (but that it was going to take a while to get power back) we left for a hotel... I understand where you're coming from!

4. So, it did hit the national news. I wondered about that.
But I am NOT happy to hear there is more unstable weather on the way. It's raining again now, and I was askert about that.

6. I guess the BOOMERS I'm hearing are from Rosenblatt Stadium, for the World Series.
Whew! I don't even know who won.

I feel very disoriented without news for a couple days. Ugh!

10. I thought the fireworks were due to the World Series?
The person who told me that was a gal at the gay bar I frequent. I went there last night for air conditioning, but they were without power too.

But anyways, she's not too bright. A bunch of us had to quit playing a card game one night because she didn't know the difference between dealing right or left, or the difference between clockwise and counter-clockwise.

She kept picking fights about it, so we all decided just to quit playing cards. No point in arguing with an idiot :eyes:

So I am not surprised that I was misinformed.

12. Rosenblatt hosts the *college* baseball World Series , so that may be true.
She does sound like an interesting character, though. :-)

I hope that Omaha's done with this series of storms.. sounds pretty nasty.

7. Yep, it sucks. I spent two weeks without power or a phone in Florida
in August after hurricane Charley. It took a week just to clear the debris from our street so that I could drive out of here to an area that had air conditioning and food. Solar/ hand cranked radios and lanterns can be a Godsend in those situations.

9. OMG. That really sucks. The longest I went without power was, I think, 1997, due to an ice storm.
It was fucking cold here too! After a couple days, I called my dad and asked him if he'd take in his orphan daughter, and the dog. Thought I was gonna die! He was not allowed to have pets where he lived, but told me to bring both our bones to his place anyway.

OMG, I slept on his couch and it was total heaven. He's a great cook too, and fed me 3 meals a day. I was starving. My dog promptly took a poop on his carpet, but I got it cleaned up and disappeared before dad found it. Dad woulda been so pissed! LOL!
