1. One low-cost option: Get a firm mattress from an outlet and throw some memory foam on top.
It worked for me.

3. Worked for me too...except we skipped the new matress part
We took our 15 year-old matress off, threw away the box spring, put down some 2x6's to make a platform bed, put the old matress back on, added an inch and a half of memory foam...

BINGO! Great sleep.

2. Just one person's (ok, two people's) experience, but...
My wife and I slept on a sleep number bed for a week a couple months ago while visiting family. We knew after the first night it was going to be a loooong week. No matter what numbers we tried, we couldn't get comfortable. The thing is a glorified air mattress - - when a person on one side moves, the air shifts on the whole thing, regardless of any claim of "sleep chambers" that are separate. At any rate, the division of the alleged sleep chambers is in the middle, which amounts to an unadjustable area right down the center of the bed. Bottom line, we hated it, and got a horrible week of sleep.

Getting home to our own bed was an incredible feeling. We have a Stearns & Foster, and we love it. Have had it for about six years now, and I have no hesitation about recommending that brand to you. Good luck.

4. get a 3 inch or more mem. foam topper (cheap from overstock.com)
and plop it on top of your old mattress. You'll be AMAZED!

If you get a nerw mattress, DO NOT GET a pillow-top. They can't be flipped over & wear out fast.

5. I really like my sleep number bed.
I know people who are passionate about their memory foam too, but I think they get depressions and sags after awhile, especially if you're heavy.

Sleep number has sales occasionally. Also they send out "friends and family" coupons occasionally to people who bought them, so if you know anyone who has one, ask them if they get those coupons. 10% or 15% off could be fairly significant, given the prices of them.

7. I know several people who have NOT
liked the Temperpedic (sp?) beds yet some have loved them. I would test that one several times before deciding on that. Even with the option of having each side feel differently it's a very different feeling than conventional mattresses.

Also, if you get one with a pillow topper, make sure the pillow topper feature is on both sides of the mattress so you can still flip it over. Some come that way and some don't.

Good luck ! :) A mattress is an important decision, I know I have to be comfortable when I sleep ! :dilemma:
