8. When you land in Honolulu, you come in over a lot of water... and then industrial buildings.
Boston? You could fly in over Boston Harbor -- lots of water -- and then over "THE WALL" (where a WorldJet crashed in the 1970s while I was on the air as a talk host...)

But you know what the pilots say?

"The biggest danger we face every day is ... driving to the airport!"

I am sure the pilots are safe, but that just seems a bit close for comfort.

30. Here's the description of that 1982 accident:
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 02:16 PM by Radio_Lady
Incidents and accidents

World Airways Flight 30: On January 23, 1982, a World Airways DC-10 landing at Boston's Logan International Airport under icy conditions and limited visibility slid off the end of the runway and plunged into Boston Harbor, separating the cockpit section from the rest of the aircraft and killing two people. The main cause of this accident was the Boston Port Authority's failure to provide adequate runway braking reports to the crew although previous aircraft had reported little to no braking action prior to World's landing.

Runway photo and other information is at: http://www.celebrateboston.com/disasters/aviation/crash1982.htm

32. That's amazing that only 2 people died, considering a plane full of people plunged into ice water!
210 of the 212 people survived and that seems miraculous to me - thanks for the info.

They searched for the people... but never found them as I recall.

Go to: http://www.airdisaster.com/photos/wa30/photo.shtml -- they have four photos of the accident scene.

My hotel was one of the buildings in the background of the photo. Believe me, watching the planes land is even freakier in real life.

13. I can't believe people are even allowed to be there. Of course, I also can't believe
a lot of things people do, like

Hiking up Mt. Huashan in China

or even hiking up Half Dome in Yosemite, then

dangling your feet over a 4,737-foot vertical drop from the top

or driving the infamous Death Highway in Bolivia

or "highlining" (Dean Potter has highlined the "Lost Arrow" with no net and no safety rope or gear)

or even climbing "Angel's Landing" for that matter. (Note hikers at right edge of photo.)

Thanks for posting!

I like terra firma.

Two feet on the ground.

We're going to a 9,500 ft. ski resort for a vacation in August 2008 -- Breckenridge, Colorado.

I guess we'll do some hiking there, but novice or intermediate trails only. I didn't hike when I was younger (Florida is hot and flat, guys).

I'm probably never going to take it up in earnest in my 70th year.

11. the landing at Washington National seems almost that close from the ground
I doubt that a person can still go there, but it used to be a favorite place to go and park, get out of the car and sit on the bluff. Planes would come in right over your head for landing. We used to laugh that we could tickle the pilot if we had a yardstick. The parking lot was always jammed with rubberneckers. Some even had radios to listen to the tower.

16. when i was but a young sprout...
we would park a car just outside the airport fence, lay on our backs on the hood smoking a big old bowl, and wait for the jets to fly over on landing. yelling "WHOOO!" when they went over. but we always had to watch out for the police.

but hell, doing that on a public beach? bigger jets, even lower than i ever experienced?

WHOOO!

i'm off to priceline to book my next vacation...

21. I used to be terrified of landing... even in good weather. But I stayed at a Marriott Hotel
at the airport in Atlanta for several days during a company meeting. My room faced the main runways.

Watching the Delta planes land one after another... just routine landings... no alarms... nothing to fear.

That gave me more confidence than I ever thought I would have about the nature of flying.

Incoming airplanes are no higher than about 100 feet at most and fly right over the highway.

36. Check out Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil
The city grew around it, and there are skyscrapers all around it, the city rises up around you when you land. A plane crashed there last year, skidded across an avenue and wrecked a building, killing over 300 people.

Ck. out the first vid at the 32 sec. mark.
I've been in the position of that car many times when an F15 or F22 was coming in at ~100' above me. You could scream at the top of your voice and not hear yourself; they were so loud.

F-22 Raptor Demo Landing

And for anyone who marvels at aircraft maneuvers, ck this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Q6Vb9xJM0

it's such a thrill to see this up close....when it first goes into that vertical climb, it's breath-taking.

But I would not be comfortable on that beach with the planes coming in like that. Some how, I've more confidence in our military pilots, especially since I've known many of them.
