Does saying "God Bless America" automatically make someone a Republican?
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 07:38 PM by mutley_r_us
I usually assume this when I see a bumper sticker or something saying that, but I was wondering about that today. What makes the phrase "God Bless America" uniquely Republican? There are plenty of religious liberals out there, and who's to say they wouldn't want God to bless America?

This is how I entertain myself during my commute to work. :P

1. Only if one implies that every other country can go to hell
Which does happen sometimes

2. Most of the liberals I know (even the Christian ones) don't find it necessary
to advertise their faith like that. Republicans/conservatives seem to think that if they don't make a public spectacle of their faith, then someone might doubt their Conservative Cred. This is why I always tend to think of people with stickers like that as being Republican.

3. No, but it does indicate a poor grounding in theology.

10. Yes, you are supposed to worship in private, right?

28. Actually I was referring to the difference between the Old Testament...
and the New Testament, i.e. the Hebraic tradition in which God named the Hebrews as His chosen people and the revelation of Christ in which individuals are the chosen people. God, in this view, does not bless countries, rather individuals. Salvation is not because you are a member of a tribe, church, country, political party, color, gender or any other descriptor, rather salvation is an individual action based upon the submission of self to God.

As far as praying in private and public, that is a much overlooked issue of the evangelical right, that is, a "show" of prayer has received its reward by being seen, and the prayer will result in no other outcome.

4. It certainly shows a shaky understanding of the...
...separation of church and state. So, yes, I guess it does make them a Republican.

11. Well, a private citizen who is not directly involved in government
can wish for God to bless America without it being a separation of church and state issue.

5. Yes. Your teeth all fall out, you sprout a mullet, and you start to smell of cheap beer.
Your IQ drops 50 points, and you can't have a conversation without making multiple references to Nascar.

I just need a "God Bless America" bumper sticker?

21. Your sense of humor. Forever after you will love only Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy...
and your idea of humor will be to holler 'Git er done' accompanied by a pelvic thrust.
It is a grim fate.

23. Yes, but it'll be a bizarre death involving moonshine, an angry bear, or perhaps both...
and it'll make the news in the 'look at how THIS idiot did himself in' category.

24. Mmm, as long as there's moonshine, I should be okay.
If I'm good and drunk it won't matter.

7. it looks like a demand instead of a request and if there is a God shouldn't the
bumper sticker owner want to request that God bless everyone?

15. The ones who really mean it, yeah.
The ones who say that and mean only Americans are no different than people who go to church simply to be seen at church.

in the blessing of God to be only on America.

14. For the most part, just like saying "God Bless the Whole World. No Exceptions!" makes me suspect
they are a Democrat. I've actually started saying it reflexively in place of the GD word whenever I want to use a mild oath. This is especially important when I am at work and I don't want to use profanity!:-)

20. You might be aware of my signature line.
I'm somewhat of a republican in recovery, have always voted Democratic or Independent, and do NOT believe in any God that would use force or deceit. Or the republicans who do. Or the part of myself that would. You can believe whatever you wish and live however you wish, so long as you don't nose into my business and I'll try to not nose into yours. That's how it should be. (I don't know what to do about those who cannot live without having their nose in others' business, however.)

Progress, not perfection...

27. I have a bumpersticker that says "God Bless the Whole World, No Exceptions"
:-)

I saw one on a car in the parking lot of a Kucinich rally, and I knew I had to have one for my own car's bumper.
