I made a little kid cry today. Not my proudest moment as a Sunday School teacher...

:hide:
You see, we were playing a card game about bible stuff, and this little guy (about 5 years old) was complaining that he didn't know anything about bible stories, he just knows about 'dinosaurs and sex.'
So I started laughing like the brain-damaged hyena that I am, and my little sister and her best friend started laughing too. The kid thought we were making fun of him, so he started yelling at us, and then started to cry.
I felt like the world's biggest and dumbest asshole. Seriously, what am I, nine? I got the kid to cheer up pretty quickly, but I still felt like an idiot. The other Sunday School teacher said basically 'way to go, dumbass.' :P
Keep in mind that my day job is one where sensitivity and maturity are hallmarks of my profession. So what the hell happened?

So there you have it, Elrond Hubbard...making little kids cry...for Jesus!

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to add, the kid didn't say 'sex' he said 'insects'...we just misheard him. You know, to make me look like even MORE of a stupid ass :banghead:

5. When I was coaching a Destination Imagination team one afternoon...
I was trying to get them to move on to another
task and the kids kept saying "one sec". Every
time I asked them to move into the circle,
EVERY ONE of them said "one sec!".

Finally I got frustrated and yelled
"NO MORE SECS"...

a hush fell upon the room, and then
they all started cracking up.

They NEVER let me live it down.

29. Way to go, sport! Kidding... I teach elementary school
and did the same thing once. I can't think of any other times my actions produced tears other than in a few instances involving disciplining. I work with third graders and have been at it for a while now so I have really honed the skill of getting my job done without making kids cry.

On a funny note: THE funniest thing a kid ever said to me was when I taught kinder.
I was on the floor one morning during free-choice time making a leggo house with this boy who was a deep thinker. After about 15 minutes he looks up at me and says, "Mr. S., do you have a job?"

Working with children is very challenging, and one of the most challenging aspects of it is always having to keep yourself in check to keep the vibe nice and respectful.
