I know what you mean when you say "it was the hardest thing you've ever done." You feel so responsible and they are your babies. You did the right thing, gave her a wonderful life and then kept her from suffering. What more can any any beloved pet ask for. I have been there also, we probably all have. She's not in pain anymore.

11. Big Hugs
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....  :hug:

32. My vet gave this to me...I pass it on.
The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let the grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
And stay with me, if you can, to the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time, you will see,
It is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail its last was waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Don't grieve that it should be you,
Who must decide this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Smile, for we walked together for a little while.

two go in three weeks.

That was Luna in her younger days, when she used to race out of the house and run the back 40 all day, rolling in mud and coming home stinky and happy.

62. She was amazing Wcross....
At 15, Luna had "old lady" veins and so the vet had to try a couple of different spots, but I must say, I really feel the vet was trying to find the "right one."

Luna was stoic. our eyes were locked. We never stopped looking at each other. I held her in my arms until I knew she was gone, and then I sobbed for the days when she would run in the fields and grin at me as she came barreling home smelling like a dead something.

I hope she is running somewhere now, knowing that I loved her more than anything.

I did that myself last year, I was taken aback when the Vet asked me if I wanted to be with her. I was astonished that such a question would even need to be asked.

I hope you never stop thinking about her, that in time you will smile instead of cry. Luna, good girl.

75. ...
reading this reminded me so much of my dog Kerry

I held him while he was put down too.

eyes locked

I miss him, he was such a good dog.

I don't have a yard for a dog now. My son and stbx do, and they just lost the little Sheltie named Keltie who was 2 years old to seizures a couple of weeks ago. Amazingly, I bonded some to her, but never in the way I did to Kerry. He came to us as a 7 month old dalmatian that was scared of his own shadow, like he'd been beaten. We took care of him and loved him and he finally got to where he was just a big lap dog, (no one's lap is that big though :P ) and he needed people. He was so sick before we put him down. Nothing the vet could ever put his finger on, just old age, arthritis. He finally seemed to have a stroke and could no longer walk without falling down to the left. When he was put down, hundreds of small bladder crystals came out in his urine. I can imagine that he must have had pain from that? We never could find any evidence of bladder crystals (dalmatians have a very high uric acid content and we fed him special food, lamb and rice, for years) I was stunned, and in the context of the situation was too sad over his death to think much about it. Anyway, I'm rambling and not sure why, but your words made me remember that moment. I believe I helped him leave, I saw the lights go out in his eyes.

sorry if this didn't help

80. My dear friend, thank you for sharing this with us.
I was there for three vet-assisted losses, my Cairn Terrier, Rags, at 18 1/2, my tabby cat, Angela, who I adopted when both my uncle and aunt died, and nuxvomica's cat, Amos, who was my beloved kitty, too, and it never does get any easier. And when my grandmother died, the person closest to me, her financial adviser went with me and got the man in her life up in the middle of the night. He had his hearing aids off. But when I called one of her close friends to tell him of her passing, he said that Paul, who loved her, holding her hand, finally gave her permission to leave us. And I believe that.

And I don't know why I'm going over this, just now, either, but your words evoked a memory...

she was so sweet - the sweetest dog I have ever been around. All she ever needed was to rest her head on my knee.

She was my best friend for close to 18 years so I called in the next day and told them I had a headache. I didn't tell them I had a headache from crying all night.

I'll try not to make you cry on Monday.

77. My heart goes out to you, my friend.
I've been there, and it never gets any easier. And you've had this beautiful dog for most of her 15 years, so she'll leave a huge hole in the life of your family. But you did the right thing, since you put her needs first. My love to all of you. And I'm here, if you need anything.

From Rhiannon and Jack :grouphug:

101. Oh, Jesus, MB, I know.
I still can't sleep at night because Meneken's pillow is right beside my head. He took possession of that from the very first day I brought him home, since he must have been used to that. And I'm used to him being there and hearing his little snore.;(

I know, MB, and my heart breaks for you. It will get easier, but not for a long time. I adopted Meneken in 2002. You have had a much longer life with Luna. I'm alone until Sunday. Call me if you need to talk. I'm more than willing to listen, since I became fond of Luna, too. Such a "precious life," as my friend in rescue says about her guys...

But Luna truly lucked out when she found you.

104. MB,
That's Al. He was also affected by your loss, hated it when I told him about her. And it was much more complicated with his Paddy, he went through so much with her, but that was the day he bonded with Charlie, the first time that his recalcitrant pup showed him affection, because he was hurting. I hope that Egypt can console you.

111. My 17-year-old cocker had some fusion in his discs, and I had to hold him up to bring him out,
but I took him for veterinary acupuncture, and he was walking fine again, with just a few sessions. Best of luck with your beloved older dog. I've been there, too.
