Those white lines on the cross-walk aren't magical
Just so you know.

Twice this evening I saw people just walk straight off the sidewalk, into the intersection without so much as a glance left or right to see if it were safe to cross.

One lady almost got creamed by the car in front of me.

I just don't understand how people attain adulthood without knowing to look left and right before stepping into the street.

1. God's way of culling the herd?
Of course, I am more likely to believe that people are simply oblivious to their surroundings, but the first proposition is tempting;)

3. Which is why it ought to be the law
that people yield to cars, and not the other way around (yes, I'm looking at you California!)

4. Those white lines are there to give perspective
So the police pictures have a sense of scale when they take pictures of those recently Darwinned.

5. Bonus points if they have a cane or walker
For New Englanders, traffic is a competitive, full-contact sport!

6. White lines are NOT a green light.
Even though some people think so. Then there was the idiot that got hit by a train that he didn't notice was coming because he was busy yakking on his cell phone while walking across the tracks.

7. I have seen this happen so many times.
C'mon people...give the cars a chance to see you and to stop.

Contrary to your beliefs, the cars don't automatically stop as soon as you step into the crosswalk.

It is unbelievable to me that people are this stupid.

8. Red lights aren't magical either.
Are people insane for going through green lights assuming that cars won't barrel through the intersection?

9. Oh, lord, would you have fun in DC.
I LOATHE pedestrians in DC. They cross against the light. They cross where they please. They walk through slow traffic. They get mad at YOU if a near-hit is their fault. And no, they don't look.

11. 3 weeks ago, I had a guy walk into the crosswalk and kick my car
He was mad that I had driven into the crosswalk to stop at the stop sign.

But no walkers were there when I stopped and I HAD TO pull into the crosswalk to see if any cars were coming so I could enter the intersection.

All of a sudden this guy ran into the crosswalk and came over and kicked my car!

i jumped out, told him to get the fuck away from my car and my passenger called 911. The guy ran off. The cops were there within minutes and said they knew who the guy was and they would go pick him up.

Fortunately the idiot was too drunk to kick my car hard enough to damage it.

12. he KICKED your car?
Holy Shit would I have been pissed if that happened to me. You did right by calling the cops. I think I would have had to restrain him while calling though.

13. I surprised myself
I got so pissed.

I had one guy in my car and 2 in a car behind me who were following us. They all said I jumped on him so fast they couldn't believe it.

I was also pretty surprised he didn't damage my car.

18. He was pretty drunk
I think he missed with his foot and slammed into my car with his body. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

15. Only time I ever physically touched a car in a situation like that
was when I was already in the crosswalk and he turned the corner and just didn't look and almost ran into me.

And the only reason I touched it was because I jumped back and my hand was out far enough to tap the side of his car AS I JUMPED OUT OF THE WAY. I was carrying heavy groceries in both hands, so I kinda used their inertia to help me move back out of the way in time.

Needless to say, he was a bit surprised to hear a noise and suddenly see someone inches away from his window.

16. You'd think they'd know to look at both lanes when crossing the street in a car too
but they don't.

I almost got into an accident last week when somebody pulled out in front of me going no more than 20 mph... on a road that had a speed limit of 45 or 50. That person was watching the lane they had to cross over, but not the one they were going into. Suddenly there was a car only a few feet ahead of me going at least 35 mph slower than I was. I'm lucky I was in my grandpa's car and not my grandma's, 'cause the tires are better in his car. Had I been driving the other car I probably wouldn't have been able to decelerate fast enough.

17. We have a lot of foot traffic in my town. The typical method of
crossing the street is to step into the street as the light turns green, thereby preventing traffic from moving in either direction. Once across the street west to east, proceed halfway across the bridge, then step in to the street again to make your north to south crossing.
