I just realized I'm a prude.
I went to get my car lubed, and this woman in the waiting room was wearing this belt buckle, but in brass or gold or something:

And all I could think was "Geez! What if a child came in here when you're wearing that?".

I'm not only old, I'm old and prudish.

Hey! Get off my lawn!

1. I dont think you were unnecessarily startled
I think you are right, as well as that belt buckle being in very poor taste.

3. Thanks! That makes me feel bettter.
I knew it was something I would never wear, but couldn't really decide whether I was just being judgmental. I try not to be, but some things are just a bad idea!

2. That's not prudish so much as
being continually shocked and disappointed in the bad taste of those around you. :(

4. Meh... it's a word, is all.
There's a great documentary called (cover your eyes!!): Fuck

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486585/

I highly recommend.

7. When I worked in criminal mediation, we were told to NEVER allow
profanity to be used in a session. The reason being that a lot of people--especially seniors and others who aren't used to hearing such language--see it as an aggressive behavior, and are intimidated by its usage. This would be especially true when they were sitting across the table from someone who had already committed a crime against them, of course. But it made me stop and think about the use of "strong" language.

I will add the film to my queue, though. Thanks!

9. I understand, but I also refuse to personally be offended by "curse" words.
There's no real known basis for why words like "fuck" are so taboo. Now, words that stem from bigotry or hate are very different in my opinion. I also come from a long-line of potty-mouthed bleeding heart liberals so my "shock-factor" at words like "fuck" and "shit" is significantly desensitized. ;)

29. It is just a word, but so are other words that are slurs.
I still think it is extremely tacky. I use the word on occasion but that doesn't mean I need scream it out loud. Some people are offended by it. And I try to take that into consideration.

30. Mine is, too. But I wouldn't wear something like that out of consideration
for others. I think it's classless to push something like that into someone else's face.

for wearing a makin' bacon t-shirt. I thought it was 'punny.' The FUCK belt buckle merely demonstrates a lack of imagination.

15. Cars are a vast mystery to me. All I know is that I get in, turn the key,
and the thing takes me where I want to go. How it does that is someone else's area of expertise. For which I am grateful.

16. I'm the biggest pervert here, and I tend to agree.
I'd have thought the same thing. I don't think a 7 year old needs to be asking his mom what "fuck" means. Doesn't bug me, but it's inappropriate.

21. In some situations, fine. Whatever.
But in a public place like a shopping mall it's rude and insulting. Disrespectful, arrogant, immature, and a pretty sure sign that their parents are probably lazy and stupid, and they did a piss-poor job of instilling a sense of consideration for others in their children.

I don't think you're being a prude. You've been insulted. That's why they do it.

22. A friend of mine had a t-shirt years ago that said:
The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States guarantees me the right to say "Fuck".

He got tossed out of a lot of stores and malls and such when wearing it, but we agreed that it made something of a valuable point.

26. I'm not a prude, and that's just pointlessly tacky.
I wouldn't worry so much about kids seeing it- any old enough to read it have heard it (and probably got the speech about what kids aren't supposed to say) a few times. And they'll learn eventually that some grown-ups have absolutely no manners or taste, so it's a good teachable moment, really.

Maybe if it was a shirt or something that would be different, but an actual belt buckle? That's a little too much.

33. You're not prudish, considering your vocation
And while I'm neither offended nor shocked by the belt buckle, I just think it's a bit juvenile. Save the "good stuff" for those times -- and there certainly ARE those times -- when the F-bomb is not only called-for, but the only appropriate word. Overuse it, and it loses its effectiveness.

I was walking home from the train station and passed a family hanging out on the street, and I swear she wasn't older than 4, but their youngest daughter was wearing a Hooters tank-top.

I'm not joking.

Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 10:39 PM by Book Lover
I'm not saying this woman is a punk, but let's just say I *still* have clothes in my closet that I embroidered curse words onto. And that I will on the correct occasion wear.

If your sweet innocent 7-year-old asks you what fuck means, you say "It's a swear word, honey. You don't say them until you're older."

And then you get over yourself.
