Original message
I have decided to eat healthier
meaning a lot less red meat, less soda, and more vegetables and white meat such as chicken and turkey.

Tonight, for the first time in a long time, I had NO soda, and NO red meat, but I did have some cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, and pineapple with a small bit of chicken on a skewer on the grill. It was Excellent over some white rice, steamed.

Thank you for reading...

Jason.

But, still, that's very good. Except I hate mushrooms.

normally, I don't either, but someone insisted that they would be very good grilled, and surprise, they were excellent.

I appreciate the tip about brown rice.

5. You know I thought about that
once the tomatoes were on the grill, but figured the heat would kill any salmonella. Also, they were locally grown, so I don't think there is a problem.

4. I started going soda-free for the most part a few years ago
with the occasional exception of something like Jones, which has cane sugar instead of corn syrup, or some with splenda instead of sugar. It made a fairly quick difference in how I felt. I'm still trying to lose some weight, but that's 'cause I have a huge appetite and I'm no longer doing manual labor 20-25 hours a week, not 'cause of WHAT I'm eating. :P

23. I can no longer drink soda
Actually I have not been a soda drinker for about 15 years since I gave it up to avoid weekend caffeine withdrawal headaches during my last summer as a camp counselor. Ah, youth.

Anyway, today I can barely drink it. I'll have an occasional small glass of Coke with lots of ice on a hot summer day, but that's it - normally every kind of soda save ginger ale is just sickly sweet to me. And I don't like ginger ale.

31. It doesn't have to be cold turkey (pun intended)
Go gradual. It's good that you're training yourself to like veggies and fruits more. Summer is a good time to do it, because when it's really hot, a cool salad is more appealing than hot'n'heavy meat.

If you need that cold caffeinated drink fix during the day (lord knows I do) unsweetened fresh ice tea with lemon is a good alternative to pop. (Even sweet tea can be better if you use sugar that isn't overly processed- I think real sugar is actually much less harmful than HFCS)

I'm vegetarian, so such observations just jump out at me, but seriously, sounds like a major move in the right direction.

And being vegetarian doesn't garauntee a healthy diet. Pizza, sodas, potato chips... I can go days without eating a vegetable!

38. rice

The method is from Saveur magazine. You will be amazed.
Boil 12 cups water in a large pot with tight fitting lid. Add 2 cups brown rice, stir once, and boil UNCOVERED for 30 minutes. Drain the rice, and then put it back in the pot and cover tightly. Let sit for ten minutes. Fluff it with a fork and cool if using for stir fry.

Just eliminting the soda sounds like it will make big difference in your diet.
