Really "thick" men's dress shirts?
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 01:19 PM by MorningGlow
Help! Mr. MG needs dress shirts for work, and he doesn't like to wear undershirts, so I need to find some nice, thick dress shirts so his man-nips and chest hair don't show through. And they need to be fit in our budget (preferably under $50, as I need to buy several). Any recommendations? I've found some medium-weight shirts at JCPenney (using up a gift card from his mom), but most of the dress shirts I've seen are paper thin. TIA! :hi:

On edit: This subject line is gonna inspire at least one copycat, innit? :smackhead:

1. Try the clearance rack at a higher-end department store like Macy's
I've found some nice dress shirts there.
IMO opaque enough to hide the chest hair is tasteful.
Showing a little man-nip is sexy :P

6. LOL!
A little man-nip is okay, eh? I'll remember that!

But believe me, I bought him a white shirt at JCPenney that was as transparent as a 15-year-old pajama top. Blech.

Good idea about Macy's--we have one in the local mall near the JCP I went to. Thanks! :hi:

2. I think what you are looking for is a shirt similar to the
broadcloth ones sold at Brooks Brothers. Not the pinpoint cotton, those are too thin.

Too bad we're not rolling in dough.

Broadcloth...okay. I will look for that--thanks! :hi:

3. Stafford Executive shirts at JCPenney used to be good ones
Not the regular Stafford though--too thin.

It's been years since I wore dress shirts to work, but I'm guessing they're still pretty substantial.

8. I think I ended up with a few regular Staffords the first time around
He's only just gotten the type of job that he has to "dress up" for, and on the first round of shirt-buying last year, we ended up with some real disasters. Waste of money, because he wore the thin ones a couple of times until I put the kibosh on them. Now they're MG Jr.'s fingerpainting shirts for kindergarten.

4. Look for oxford cloth.
It's thick. It's durable. It's dress-appropriate. It's what most boy's school-uniform dress shirts are made out of because it's pretty indestructible and because it won't show through. I have a bunch of them treated with Scotchgard I wear for work because they're stain-proof.

14. Hm! If it can withstand kids, it MIGHT withstand Mr. MG
Stainproof is a plus. Do you remember where you got them?

25. I got them when i was in HS...
through the uniform supplier. (The company was called Neil Roberts but I don't know if they're still around. You might try someplace like Land's End or L.L. Bean.)

It's only stain-proof if you get the treated ones or get them treated yourself (some dry-cleaners can do it). Otherwise it actually wicks moisture. All mine are white and they're machine washable, so I can bleach the ones which are not Scotch-garded if I need to.

5. One of the best brand names for what you want is John Clarendon.
They make good, although not excellent, shirts with just the thickness and concealment you want. They are available in most department stores, I think.

I used to sell men's clothing, so anything you want to know, just ask me... B-)

Coo'! So, like, whatever happened to the Dockers with cuffs? Mr. MG's worn through his (the cuffs, I mean), and I can't find replacements. I hate shopping for men's clothes. It's not my strong suit. Pun intended. :D

15. First thing: Dockers suck. If you want khakis, get Calvin Klein or Gary Player khakis.
Pleated or un-pleated; doesn't matter; just don't get Dockers. They suck.

18. I'm tweaking to that, better late than never
They wear through SO FAST.

I really hope that my MIL doesn't send any more JCP gift cards (but she works there, part time), because I really can't find any decent stuff there anymore.

13. Tempting!
That way I might get him to wear something with "character".

He's kind of a stickler for solid color shirts. I bought him a tasteful blue pinstripe and it's still folded and pinned--he says it looks like a pajama top or a circus tent. Gotta find that receipt.

16. Solid color shirts are good. They go with everything. If he's worried about "show-through",
and plain white is not a requirement, have him try cream or ecru. Those are still pretty (excuse the term) conservative ( ) but there's much less show-through with those colors.

17. He tends to go for the fairly dark colors
Not mafia-black (I can say that because I'm Sicilian ), but royal blue and such. He has three cream colored shirts and only wears them as a last resort. I say NO MORE WHITE, though. Eesh. Chest hair. Everywhere. (And he's not an overly hairy guy.)

36. Try Kohl's and look for the "croft & barrow" label
I buy the polos and they're quite substantial but reasonably priced so their button-downs, especially the henways, are probably what you're looking for.

Nordstroms has some seriously heavy shirts if you want. They can custom tailor them. They cost $$$ - but if you want seriously thick they can get it to you.

(Because button cuffs just aren't, in my opinion, dress shirts)

Nice thick cotton, comfy, hold fast, and long lasting.

Good stuff!

Or the good shirts at Macy's.

39. Don't discount thrift stores
Hospice and SPCA type thrift stores that are run locally often get really good quality stuff as opposed to the bigger Goodwill type thrift stores. It's hit and miss, but if you poke around you might find real quality shirts that actually fit.

41. Ralph Lauren makes great dress shirts.
The Polo line is expensive, BUT, if you have a Ross or like "discount" type store, you can probably find them for $40 or so. They might be last years' "models" but they're dress shirts so there's no real fashion thing there.

Perry Ellis is another one I really like. Very soft, long wearing and heavy.
