every once in awhile I remember that he's a pretty spectacular rock drummer.

Also, check out the long hair on Gabriel!

1. My God! Phil had hair once??
I'd never seen any old Genesis videos. I assumed he was always bald.

2. Yeah, his beard looks good too.
A lot of prog stuff hasn't aged well at all, but I really like the early 70s Genesis lineup.

3. I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album,
Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums...Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument...In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism...Take the lyrics to "Land of Confusion." In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. "In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock...Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like "In the Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds"...But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word 'artist.' This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite...

4. I was into their late 70's through mid 80's period
Missed the Gabriel era because I was too young. Didn't hear any of that till much later, but I liked what I heard on FM radio starting around 1977 or so. Which probably would have started with this tune......

5. I was born in '74, so Genesis, Collins and Gabriel
were all just a bunch of pop acts on the MTV until I discovered 70s rock when I was in high school.

I get what you are saying about the virtues of a stripped-down, less deliberately arty approach. I think a lot of Peter Gabriel's solo stuff is more artistically satisfying than his Genesis material, even if it is poppier. And no doubt, they are all a bunch of skilled musicians. I just don't like Phil Collins or Collins-helmed Genesis much. (except for "Land of Confusion." That is a great song - thanks for the reminder.)

Anyway, I just thought that Collins did some really great percussion work in this performance. Really elaborate, but without getting in the way of the rest of the song. And I love the cheesy Handelian coda.

6. Is this a quote from American Psycho?
It totally sounds like one, if I remember correctly.

7. Oops...
I was quoting an American Psycho (no, not George W. Bush...another one) here -- this clip will explain all but I must add a stern and resounding WARNING that the clip contains both naughty words and rather graphic (for a mainstream US R-rated movie) views of naughtybits and the vigorous juxtaposition of such -- definitely not safe for work, not safe for home, and probably not safe for mental wellness:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsdd1GQ0oFM

If you survived that, you might want to steel yourself for his views on Huey Lewis (this time the side effect is gory violence, though most is implied off-camera -- still very disturbing to behold and not good for sensitive stomachs -- and naughtywords):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llREhQB861M

Sometimes these music snobs get carried away.

He's not all sex and violence, though -- he's also a philosophizer, with Whitney Houston as his muse:

My views on Phil Collins, by the way, are basically that I can take him or leave him; he's good at what he does, but that most of what I've heard doesn't really move me too much. I also happen to be allergic to much '80s pop and especially so to the synthesizer-driven stuff.

10. I still haven't gotten around to seeing or reading that
I kinda got the impression that it was one of those books/movies that is a little bit too impressed with its own cleverness without being quite good enough to pull it off. And making fun of Huey Lewis is like shooting fish in a barrel.

But I like deadpan black humor, bizarre morbidity and unreliable narrators, so perhaps I should give it a chance. Plus I've followed Bateman for awhile now, and think he's really great.

9. Selling England by the Pound
is one of my all time favorite albums ever. I've not been without a copy of it since I first heard it around '82 or so. Of course, I'm a big prog rock fan, so it would appeal to me. Firth of Forth is spectacular, Battle of Epping Forest...super stuff.
