Bikini-clad women make men impatient

Bikini-clad women make men impatient
Images of sexy women tend to whet men's sexual appetite. But stimulating new research in the Journal of Consumer Research says there's more than meets the eye. A recent study shows that men who watched sexy videos or handled lingerie sought immediate gratification—even when they were making decisions about money, soda, and candy.

Authors Bram Van den Bergh, Siegfried DeWitte, and Luk Warlop (KULeuven, Belgium) found that the desire for immediate rewards increased in men who touched bras, looked at pictures of beautiful women, or watched video clips of young women in bikinis running through a park.

"It seems that sexual appetite causes a greater urgency to consume anything rewarding," the authors suggest. Thus, the activation of sexual desire appears to spill over into other brain systems involved in reward-seeking behaviors, even the cognitive desire for money.

"After they touched a bra, men are more likely to be content with a smaller immediate monetary reward," writes Bram Van den Bergh, one of the study's authors. "Prior exposure to sexy stimuli may influence the choice between chocolate cake or fruit for dessert."

1. This could all be summed up in two words: "sex sells."
Yet another example of people using good money to find out things everybody already knew.

2. Well no, its kinda new twist
Because the men in the study aren't actually going out and buying the product in the commercial..and sometimes its not even a commercial but just a picture...and doing something like shopping or even just eating candy.
Its a very interesting connection between sexual desire and other impulses....:)

4. Yeah, or sublimating sexual desires into something else.
The way a lonely person might overeat, or self-medicate with alcohol/drugs (I speak somewhat from experience here).

3. OK, so if I understand this right...

...advertisers could...bear with me here, it's pretty complex...advertisers could somehow...I don't know...maybe juxtapose images of, say, their clients' products with images of scantily clad women. Or they could use...I'm just hypothesising wildly...attractive actresses in commercials aimed at men. That would then make men more likely to buy. Fascinating.

I really hope the advertising industry never catches onto this. We'd be putty in their hands.

6. That's wildly brilliant!
They'll never figure that out, though. Dumb ad execs and their creative staffs.

7. well its more complex than that
Its saying that seeing cleavage makes men more likely to act impulsively as in to eat unhealthily or to buy *stuff* not necessarily the stuff in the commercial..hell according to this study all a man has to do is handle lingerie and he wants to eat everything or go on a shopping spree.
I wish people would actually read this article..I think its very interesting..and different.

8. My question is...
"After they touched a bra, men are more likely to be content with a smaller immediate monetary reward," writes Bram Van den Bergh, one of the study's authors.

Why am I never asked to be part of these frikkin' studies?!

10. Our research has yet to be published.
I suspect that part of the reluctance of the major journals to accept our findings may have to do with the large amount of funding we get from the Miracle Whip corporation.

19. That short-term rewards thing would be useful for insurance adjustors
or other people who need to negotiate settlements. Put a smokin' hot assistant out front (or just be smokin' hot yourself) and meetings will go like this:

"Well, Mr. Smith, your case is long and complex. We can deal with it over the next few months, or you can just have this cookie now."

"COOKIE! COOKIE!"
