I have a migraine and no migraine meds.
I am supposed to fill out the application for patient assistance this weekend and send it to my doctors nurse, but my head hurts too much.
Vicodin and diet pepsi, that's my life.

1. you need medicinal mj. much better than vicodin
much healthier for you. stops the pain, nausea, helps you go to sleep or lets you function at a basic level if need be, unlike the hard drugs you have to take from a pharmacist.

2. What works for me...
lay down in the dark, total silence, and wait til you vomit (somehow that makes it end, but it has to happen naturally). I also find cold helps.

3. Good advice, always the things that worked for me
when I had migraines. Except vomiting didn't always make them end. Sometimes, I just vomited and the pain continued.

I havent had them in several years, for whatever reason those disappeared for me, thank goodness.

The last place you want to be is on the computer, lights aggrevate migraines.

4. Yeah it's weird...
I used to get them all the time, now maybe twice a year.(Why the change?) But certain types of light can set them off. And you're right, when you get one, sitting and looking at your computer monitor is NOT a good idea. Unless you want it to get worse.

5. I know
I see a lot of threads about people with migraines, and wonder why they are even in front of the computer.

10. Be careful - Vicodin can actually make it worse
I feel for you - migraines suck big time. They should not be classfied as a headache. As far as I'm concerned, calling a migraine a headache is like calling a major stroke a dizzy spell.

11. I know it makes it worse
but I have very few choices and when you are in excruciating pain, you think short term.

I'm ready to confess

12. After you read this, turn off computer...
turn off lights...very dark...

if its hot there, turn air conditioner on high...

make the kids stay down stairs.. go to bed...

if you have no prescip meds.. what works for me is
two tylenol pm... a real coca cola on ice...

and total dark, total quiet, and very cool....

try to stop thinking about anything....

if you've ever been evaluated for migraine,
have you been told to eliminate a lot of
trigger foods: red wines, strong cheeses,
too much caffeine (never mind the coke you just drank)..

also try to eliminate as many animal products from your diet
as you can live without...

try to eliminate as many processed foods as you can...
if you can.... cut down on artificial sweeteners..

try to get out and walk in fresh air as often as you can,
but not in direct sunlight...

try to regulate your daily schedule so you rise at about the same
time every day, and go to bed at the same time every day....

have your blood pressure checked...

and hang in there, you aren't alone; migraines run in my family, and
we have all kinds of advice for one another...also, if you are a woman,
your menstrual cycle plays into migraine. If you are on the birth control pill,
talk to your doctor..

14. I second the Real CocaCola, cold, to chase the tylenol
a nurse told me once to do the following:

2 xtra strength tylenol
4 over the counter Ibuprofens
chased with a coke.

lie down

it works.

I quit getting them pretty much after I had a hysterectomy, whereas before I got them at least once per month.
sometimes only a big plate of french fries and a coke would keep me going until I could get home and lie down

I never got the totally debilitating migraines, but I have a high pain tolerance. I never vomited just got queasy. The heavy french fries and the coke/sugar/caffeine would stop the nausea.

The worst part was the thing would settle in my upper back right around my shoulder blades...half way between the neck and middle of my back, then it would lock in like the Tingler and just sit there and churn ..sometimes they would linger for weeks. I could still function, go to work and all but was pretty miserable all the time

13. In "Jan Michael's World" you'd have your meds.
Sadly though in this system based on avarice all I can suggest is avoid bright lights...

15. Ice packs, weed, dark, quiet. Sorry to hear that you need painkillers
Edited on Mon May-26-08 10:13 PM by grannylib
for your migraines; that must suck big-time. They don't do a thing for mine, but I've been lucky with the SSRIs.
I'll be praying that you feel better soon and can get on whatever are the right meds for your kind of migraine

On Edit: I have found that 8 ibuprofen can sometimes help if I'm out of my meds.

16. Excedrin Migraine
if you catch it early enough

avoiding bright lights

sleep

too much caffeine

run warm water over your hands and get them very warm, then put a cold compress over your forehead

warm hands, cold forehead

breathe deeply, think about warm hands, cool forehead, let it all go

some 3-4 200mg (OTC) ibuprofen help liquigels are awesome as they go to work faster and seem to upset my stomach less.

generic liquigels are available now too :)

good luck

17. Excedrin Migraine
Even a whole bottle wouldn't touch this headache. I take Aleve, but I need something MUCH stronger.

Same headache, different day. If I had health insurance, I wouldn't be going through this.

18. Possible long-term solution
I'm sorry I have no suggestions that will offer you prompt relief from your current suffering. However, I can recommend acupuncture and Chinese herbs for long-term relief. Please feel free to PM me if you want more information.

19. I've actually been trained to do my own acupuncture
for migraines, but I don't use it much. The relief is temporary, and for excruciating pain it just doesn't work well enough.

21. Have you had allergy tests yet?
I had a friend whose doctor gave her unlimited refills for barbs, to treat migraines. She eventually got allergy tests and found she was allergic to soy, which is in pretty much all processed food. She was not completely able to eliminate it from her diet, but minimized it and no longer has migraines.
