Crap - Big fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains
Looks like it's pretty close to a good friend's place - he has dogs and horses up there. I hope he's okay. :(

The wind is making it hard to fight.

1. Yeah, the news is covering it....
it's VERY windy here. I'm in town.

I think Shine's up that way. Hope she's OK.

2. Shine's in Scott's Valley
It looks like the fire is further up and east of that, at least I sure hope so. The news I'm getting is that it's up between Loma Prieta and Loma Chiquita - which is precisely where my friend's place is. :(

4. Damn! I just found more information
They list the location on the incident report as being located at Summit Road and Maymen's Flat. My friend lives on Maymen's Flat which is just a dead end road about a mile long.

Man, I hope he and his wife and the animals got out.

6. I feel just sick now
I live below there, out of harm's way but close enough to see and smell the smoke. Wildfires are so scary and the access up there is not good - narrow roads and limited egress. Hard for firefighters to get in and for people to get out.

I have to go to school and take a history exam this afternoon - how I'm going to be able to think straight, I don't know. :(

7. I would say breathe deep, but you don't really want to do that either
I swear I have PTSD episodes after our fires last fall.

Oh my god, how scary...

I know the area pretty well...

Very heavily wooded...and now this...

Good vibes to all concerned...

12. It's up to 3,000 acres. Just heard.
Edited on Thu May-22-08 02:55 PM by Shine
190 people evacuated, but no injuries, thank goodness.

Lots of road closures. 10-12 structures destroyed. :(

Super windy (30-50 mph!) right now, so that's a major concern.

14. Yeah, we can smell the smoke now
I feel for those poor people. The Governator has officially declared SC Co. a State of Emergency.

Can you smell it where you are? :hi:
