What word do you hate?
I hate utilize. A lot.

I also hate nouns that have been inexplicably turned into verbs.

You?

22. I know that this will make me sound quaint here in DU, but
I really hate the word fuck More particularly its indescriminant overuse as a substitute for actually having a vocabulary.

Nouns that have been turned into verbs are troublesome, but no less troublesome are verbs turned into nouns. For example, if I want to read something, I don't want a "good read," while I might enjoy a good book, essay, article, etc. I guess there are some that are so ingrained into our language( such as a Sunday drive, etc) that they seem almost natural, but I submitt to you that they are not. They constitute an entire 5th column in the grammar hierarcy. Thay are an insidious thing, I tell you. A slippery slope from which there is no escape, leading, inevitably, to word anarchy!!!!!

Imagine if parts of speech just sort of indiscriminantly took on whatever use they got in their mind to try out.

God gave us nouns and verbs, dammit! Transyntaxology is just not right.

First its nouns and verbs: verbs acting like nouns - nouns acting like verbs. It won't be long before the other parts start swapping places. Pretty soon you'll have adjectives modifying verbs, articles going about willy nilly on their own.

I ask you, how will you direct your object then? ... when we have article on preposition syntax? Where will it stop?

Harrrrrrrumph!

35. "issues" used in place of the word "problems".
ARRGGGHHHH!

"They're not PROBLEMS, they're ISSUES." Yeah, let's minimize those rough spots in life out of existence. Enron had "issues", screwing thousands out of their life savings. Nahhh, it's just "issues". Cancer, heart disease, death? Nahh, those are just "issues".

Nouns that get turned into verbs, like "parenting".

TV talking heads who can't say "puddles" when it rains. They say "ponding" which isn't even a real word. A noun turned into a verb, yet again.

ARRRGGHHH!

:grr:

The serious adverb shortage. "He acted weird" instead of "He acted weirdly"(correct).

ARGGGHHH!!!

Generalized apostrophe abuse, due to confusion about plurals, and the belief that any word with an S on the end is fair game for an apostrophe.

Note: "It's" is a contraction of "it is".
"Its" is a possessive word -- as in "its own".

"A lot" is TWO WORDS. "All right" is TWO WORDS.

36. 'Diss'.
People are going along speaking in normal vocabulary and then all of a sudden they say 'diss'. People who you wouldn't expect it either.

Like this fake example: The Queen Mum said on Thursday "I shall no longer be visiting the otherwise fine island of Guam ever since they dissed the government at large."

Along the same lines, 'word' (to signify agreement). This isn't a Cameo song, stop using it.

41. "aldermans"
This one needs some explainin'.

I'm a member of the local Board of Aldermen, which is our name for the city council. Several other members of the board are older, blue collar types, and so are a lot of the people who testify before the board. Aparently more than one alderman is aldermans.

It drives me nuts. Some day I'm going to snap and call a parliamentary point of order on someone who "aldermans" one time too many.

Either that or I'll turn it into a drinking game.

I'm not a freethinker: I'm an atheist, I'm a humanist, I'm supernaturalless, I'm deity-free.

Please whoever it is who thinks that we need a cutesy label, just stop. I'd even prefer "brights" because it may be dumb but it is not pretentious. Freethinker is pretentious. It implies that we're the only ones seriously thinking about spiritualism and related moral issues. Wonder why we're disliked and invoke such a hostile response? It's because clearly some of us "godless heathens" insist on finding the single most offensive label they can and imposing it on the rest of us by insisting it be used to the exclusion of other labels.

I'm a vegetarian and I use "veggies" as a plural of "veg". I use "veg" as a descriptor for "vegetarian" because it's too long to type or say "vegetarian" that many times in a day.

71. A few...
"dis". "vitriol". "spew".

My worst is "proof" simply because there are so many half-educated, sub-literate, knuckle-dragging posters (here and on other boards) who don't seem to know the difference between the words "proof" and "evidence"-- two words which are light-years apart in meaning.

77. "Retarded"...
...as a synonym for bad or stupid. The diminutive "retard" as well.

The most cowardly of insults, perhaps.

78. In the same light....
...."gay" meaning the same thing.

And I'm not gay or even that up to speed on gay issues. I still think it is offensive to use.

81. Irregardless of its status as a non-word, I still like irregardless.
It flows so much better off the tongue than "regardless" or (yuck) "irrespective."

86. "pwned"...code word for "I am a f**king idiot"
Also, people who post threads with "oh NOES" in them should be sent straight to Gitmo. I know that sounds harsh, but it was Darwin who introduced the idea of thinning the herd, not me.

And what's with the "pwned" spelling that inexplicably has the numeral 3 in it?

And what the hell does "Pwned" even mean?

89. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, by Thomas Kuhn, 1964.
The book that made the word popular.

A paradigm is a theory or model. As in "new scientific paradigm".

Einstein's theory of relativity was a new paradigm for atomic physics.

91. "about" used in artspeak, art school papers, artists' "statements."
In fact, I hate artists' "statements."

Most are bullshit and seem to have been cooked up by a bad recipe similar to this one:

http://www.mollygordon.com/resources/marketingresources/artstatemt/

(Is that really for real?)

Artists' Statements do not enhance; they detract.

Leave your "Artist's Statement" at home. Nobody cares.

Let your art be on its own. Or else.

92. Cheese
I despise the word and everything associated with cheese. Other than picture taking.

There's a lounge thread right now celebrating cheese. I could almost smell the ghastly horrors.
