Favorite Television Series
I've never been a big fan of television series in the past, but have been ill with mono for the past few months.

I've already watched the entire series of Grey's Anatomy, Nip/Tuck and Miami Vice......Don Johnson....:loveya:

Netflix has been a saving grace for me, but I'm running out of different television series to watch. Anyone watch anything on that's worth renting and watching?

I'm desperate....

190. Have you seen "Winter Sonata?"
I don't know what the original title in Korean was. I saw the Japanese dubbed version of it and it was fantastic. It was a HUGE hit in Japan.
I love watching Japanese dramas. Good language practice and it's something that my husband, who is Japanese, and I can sit down and watch together. :hi:

Season 4 will be the final season, though I've heard they might not broadcast the last 10-11 episodes until 2009.

It's a great show, not just for fans of science fiction, but for fans of character-driven stories. Probably the best TV show I've ever seen.

"Matthew Fox
Role: Charlie Salinger"

(From the show "Party of Five")

He's the same guy that's on the show Lost.

21. If you like crime dramas, Law & Order: S.V.U. is the best show on, IMO
First class writing and acting without all of the sensationalism that has become so popular nowadays. Reruns are on USA often and the newer shows are on NBC on Tuesdays and sometimes Saturday nights. I've been watching it for years and have seen most of the reruns several times. They never seem to get old.

True story: When my mom was in the hospital, we sat and watched Grey's Anatomy when waiting on test results and when the nurse came in she said that GA was annoying because it wasn't realistic. My mom asked what show in her opinion was the most realistic to actually working in a hospital and the nurse said "Scrubs". :D

Love that show, IMO, it was always good.

Also
Doctor Who (The guy who played Giles was almost a Doctor Who. He would have been great. Doctor Who is always the gentleman no matter what actor is playing him.)

Joan of Arcadia

58. A whole bunch
Some of these are current, others are older, but available on DVD

House
Monk
Psych
The Dead Zone
Numbers
Without a Trace
Criminal Minds

The CSI triumverate, though I don't care that much anymore personally for CSI: Miami

Medium

older shows:

The Odd Couple (one of my favorites!)
Barney Miller
Wild Wild West

60s and the "British Invasion":

The Saint
The Champions
UFO
The Avengers
many others

That's all for now. Though I could sit here and conceivably write all night!

They're in the fourth season now, but they put it on DVD really fast - that's why I recommend it. It's sort of sci-fi, but it's sci-fi that I think everyone from big trekkie geeks like me, to kids, to lovely young ladies all enjoy. It has sad, emotional bits in it.

I'm pretty sure they have previous seasons on DVD.

Soap - older sitcom from the 70s that was just fantastically funny.

A&E's Pride and Prejudice series from the 90s with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, if you haven't already seen it. Almost perfect.

As someone mentioned upthread, Prime Suspect (I think there were 6 or 7 miniseries) with Helen Mirren was fantastic.

edited for stupid mistakes.

particularly with that motorcycle guy that had to try twice who seemed to typify what I was witnessing in general on the show, that and the episode where there was a 'traffic jam' at one of the ladders going up to the summit.

Something about seeing all those rich people crowding up the mountain using ropes and ladders put there by native Sherpas and the trash that was being left behind and the attitudes of some of these people just turned me off.

135. "X-Files," "West Wing," "24," and "Alias" were faves. After "24"/"Alias" died in '04, I couldn't
get into anymore t.v. Not really. Which sucked, but was also good for me.

In the last couple of years, I've had flirtations with good series like HBO's "Deadwood." HBO stuff I loved before that included "The Sopranos" and before its epic flame-out in its third season, "Six Feet Under." Unless someone can come up with another "24," I doubt I'll ever really be that "into" network drama ever again. I'm thinking of watching "Medium" the next time I feel the need to watch a drama.

I'm not really a sitcom fan, but I still have a thing for "Friends" and "Fraiser," even though those both tanked hard in the end.

is Alias
it came out before 24 and Lost, and is sort of a combo of both. Think of a drama with Mission: Impossible type stunts, a great cast, cool gadgets, and lots of twists an turns. Give it a few episodes to get you hooked, but once you are, you'll find Netflix doesn't come fast enough!

That's a blast from the past. I was too young to remember, but I'm a fan of most shows...new and old. Remember Hawaii Five-O?

Another sci-fi. Short-lived because I think Fox didn't care for the digs at corporates and religious nutters.

Make sure to follow up with the concluding film, Serenity.

Seem to be about as popular here as Lost. I'm giving them a shot. Thanks.

I was never able to get into M.A.S.H. for some reason, though.

Fantastic show. It makes me so mad that it was cancelled. SOOOOOO much more intelligently written than the vast majority of the other junk out there.

Also Northern Exposure - we've been getting it from Netflix. Hubby and I watched it back in the day, and now our teen daughters are enjoying it with us.

181. Get all three seasons of Arrested Development
Funniest show ever. It's brilliant. Truly brilliant. And the episodes go by fast. You could watch the whole 3 seasons in a weekend.

I also have watched every Miami Vice ever. One you might want to try is Dallas. OMG that is awesome, Also try The Shield, an unbelievable show, always jam packed with excitement. Try the two seasons of Rome, very smart and very good stuff. Try every season of The Sopranos. The 3 seasons of Deadwood are fantastic. The West Wing is unbelievable too. I have spent the last several years watching all kinds of stuff. It's great.

If you like reality, which I typically don't, I recommend "The Deadliest Catch." I shit you not, hands down the best reality show ever. No fake BS, just guys out crabfishing in dangerous waters. It's great. Not something I would be interested in normally - partly because I'm Liberal - but the television is compelling.

Here are my top picks in order:

1. Arrested Development
2. The Shield.
3. Dallas.
4. The Sopranos.
5. The Deadliest Catch

Great entertainment and you can't go wrong.

182. I will also add Sports Night and Veronica Mars
I can't believe I forgot Veronica Mars. So good, that when I rented the dvds I watched each season in one day. That's like over 15 hours of watching in a day. :) Veronica Mars is so good, you'd have to watch it to understand how good it is. I'm a tv junkie, in the sense, that I have a video degree, so I watch tv like a rocket scientist almost. I am a sucker for the art of it. Veronica Mars is the best Teen drama ever, it's so good it's for smart adults. The best crime show? The Shield. It's unconventional, it makes everything else look like fluff. You learn to love some really fucked up people. The direction, acting and casting are superb. It might be the best series ever, although LOST is getting up there. The best comedy ever, for it's run is Arrested Development. The most brilliant writing I have ever seen on tv bar none. So funny... I can't describe it, you will laugh so hard you might feel like you'll die, that's how funny that show is.

188. OMG! A Miami Vice/Don Johnson Fan!
Edited on Sat May-17-08 04:46 PM by Blue State Native
I can't believe this! I love Miami Vice and Don Johnson! This series was so innovative and he was great in it! I can't believe that he didn't make the leap from TV actor to Movie Star status like George Clooney did. Don Johnson was at least as good as Clooney! Maybe better. And yes he was HOT!

Little known fact: Don Johnson was going to quit the series after the second season and the PTB were thinking of replacing him with Mark Harmon. :wtf::rofl: But Johnson decided to come back and thank goodness he did!

194. To my mind, nothing tops Naked City.
So much more than a police drama, the real star of the show was New York City in the early 1960s, and the eight million stories therein. Because it was shot in NY, we get to see older, established Broadway actors like Luther Adler and Burgess Meredith rubbing up against such beginners as Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, and Dennis Hopper. The police drama is secondary to the human drama.

It's also filmed in glorious black and white. Who could ask for anything more?

195. The Wire. Best show ever. But start at Ep. 1 Season 1. It's so well plotted and woven together
that you have to start at the beginning.

When it first came out I'd heard great things about it and started at around Ep.6 of season 1.I couldn't follow along and then began watching it when HBO rebroadcast the first season. And I was firmly hooked.

Ran for five seasons. The first four are available on DVD and season five is scheduled to be released in August.
