So. Cal. Hertz rent-a-car scam.
Last Sunday we picked up a rental car from Hertz in Torrance for a drive to Las Vegas. We noticed that the gas tank was only 7/8 full. When we asked why it was not full we were told that they no longer fill the tank and we only have to have 7/8 of a tank upon returning it. When I asked exactly how we were to fill the tank to 7/8 without periodically stopping the gas pump, replacing the gas cap and turning on the engine to check the fuel level we were told that that was our problem. Their new policy is 7/8 of a tank upon delivery of the car.

I discussed the issue with the Manager of the location where we dropped the car off in Vegas. He told me that Hertz in So. Cal. has been phasing in this new policy knowing that the vast majority of vehicles will be returned with a full tank as the renters will not go to the effort of putting in only 7/8 of a tank or risk being charged $7.00 to $8.00 per gallon for under-filling the tank.

The Vegas Manager gave me a $25.00 voucher to "make up for any inconvenience". I am now in the process of drafting a letter to Hertz that will accompany the voucher and the Hertz credit card that I have had for more than 20 years.

Screw em!

1. So if the returned cars get filled
Where does the 1/8 tank go before the car is rented out again?

2. It goes out with a full tank requiring the renter to return it that way.
The 7/8 policy applies to vehicles that Hertz has to gas up.

4. Thanks. Hertz was our only choice. We needed an agency close to San Pedro that would allow us to
drop off in Vegas. :hi:
