In honour of mother's day - why did your dad hook up with yer mom?
In my parent's case, my Dad was at one of her hockey games. Some woman body checked my mother into the boards. My mom turned around and promptly gave her a two-handed clubbing across the head with her hockey stick.

That sold my old man right there, "She had spirit!"

1. My parents:
My mom and bio-dad: I have no idea. Actually I have no idea what she saw in him. He was fugly and mean. Still is.

My mom and step-dad: We made him, actively forced him to...threats of violence and the whole nine yards. We said "You'd better ask her out." He did. She said "No". We said "Why the fuck did you say no? It took us 2 weeks to talk him into asking you out." She relented but insisted she wasn't going to have a good time. She did. Now, they're married. End of story.

2. I don't know about my biological parents, but I know my mom and my stepdad
met because he'd lost his wife and my stepbrother was a friend of mine in pre-school at the time. Since she'd also dealt with the loss of a spouse she decided to talk to him and do the support group kinda thing, and it just went from there.

3. well I like that she's feisty!
all I know is that they met in a bookstore... and frequented a bar called "The Little Brown Jug"

That was more than 50 years ago and probably why my house is now filled with books as well.

:hi:

4. My mom was like 18 and my dad was 23.
Yeah, it didn't really go any deeper than that.

5. Uh...she was the woman hanging around his apartment asking him to fix her car a lot.
Because her first husband, the alcoholic drug abuser, was too busy being drunk and high and stuff. Yes, it is the world's most romantic "hook up" story ever.

7. college
My dad was actually my mom's TA for a class. I don't know if they started dating then, but that is how they met. They're giant nerds. I told them once that they have the nerdiest wedding photo ever, and they got upset - I'm not sure if they ever even knew that they were nerds.

12. My parents were both living with other people when they met.
It didn't stop my dad from trying to date my mom but she refused to until after they both were out of their respective relationships. There were so many rumors that they already were dating that she figured why not give people something to talk about. He proposed on their first date and she didn't say yes immediately but about four months later they eloped on a Friday the 13th during a blizzard and 11 months later I was born.

The whole man pursuing woman for years followed by quick courtship is pretty typical of marriages in my family except for my paternal grandparents who met when my grandma, a bishop's daughter, saw a new guy in her father's church and introduced herself.

13. Mom briefly dated my uncle.
Uncle decided to hook up with her crazy friend.

Dad thought he was crazy for choosing someone over my mom, so he took a shot.

Uncle married crazy friend, they are still happy and insane today.

Dad married Mom.

Oh, and because he didn't impress her in the least and I think he liked that. No pressure. :)

15. My parents met in a submarine
During WWII, Mom was a Navy Nurse and Dad was a submariner - both were stationed in Hawaii. After WWII was over and most of the patients had been sent over, somebody decided that giving the nurses a tour of one of the subs would be a fun diversion for the nurses and the sub guys. Dad was the officer in charge of giving the tour to the group my Mom was in.

After the tour the sub officers and nurses had a dinner - Mom & Dad sat next to each other, across from the Captain. The Captain kept asking when they would get married. Mom was sent back to the mainland first and Dad dated her (much older) roommate until he was sent back and mustered out. They got married in San Francisco about six weeks after they met. They had their 62nd wedding anniversary in February.

16. My folks told two different stories.
Edited on Mon May-12-08 12:03 AM by mycritters2
They both attended the same church, and my dad said they met and really got to know each other there. My mom was a student secretary in the dept where my dad was a student (ag engineering) and my mom said that's really where they connected.

I do know that my uncle--my mom's brother--was my paternal grandfather's extension agent. My grandpa was really fond of my uncle, impressed with his knowledge, etc. When he realized that my dad was dating this extension agent's sister, he did everything he could to encourage it. My grandpa remained close to my uncle until Grandpa died. For a long time, I didn't realize that Uncle Al was related on my mom's side.
