From my experience (not directly, but watching friends), people who claim to have "open relationships" are pretty fucked up. Usually at least one of them can't stand the idea but feel like they need to agree to it to not lose what they do have with the other person. In the end lots and lots of people can be hurt. The possibility of contracting STDs is also higher - you're sleeping with anyone down this long chain by getting involved with it.
