Oh Damn damn damn damn.....Can I have a hug.
I went to the doctor yesterday.

He suggested I work on taking off 50 pounds. Only I see the 50 pounds he is talking about. All my co-workers think he is on crack and that I should get another doctor.

Well, the doc just called. My blood glucose level was 167 yesterday - fasting. :wow: It should be between 70 and 110.

I was diabetic when I was pregnant, but FUCK FUCK FUCK....I am only 39. This should not be happening to me.....

My body is failing in so many ways. I have high cholesterol, high glucose and fibromylalgia.

I just want to curl up in a ball right now...

I gained weight really quickly in the past year. I cried when I saw my weight at the office.

8. 3 pounds a week is excellent !
It will probably slow down to 2 pounds a week , but don't let this cause you despair.

One technique I used to prevent weight gain after I finish a diet , is to apply the "half portion rule" , whatever I feel like eating , I only eat half of my usual portion.

I lost 14 pounds the last month , my goal is to lose 16 more.

You can do it ! , its the best thing you can do to your health !

67. Did you know that LoveMyCali works for WW?
She's on their program and has worked for them for a few years, so she may have some good advice for you. I've actually put on some weight, probably because I was inactive for so long when I had to keep my foot elevated, and I've been drinking beer rather than wine, these days, which I have to cut out. I usually have the opposite problem, have trouble eating, and last summer my doctor threatened to have me hospitalized because I got down to 105, less than I weighed in college. nuxvomica went on a low fat diet and lost the 40 lbs. that he gained when he quit smoking, so there's a lot of help out there...:hi:

78. I know what you mean, since I've been there, LOL.
And the head of the company seems to be pro-health, like with the anti-smoking thing, though I've heard he smokes cigars...;) At TVD they offered Smoke-Enders, First Aid and CPR. I went through all of them, but did a lot better with the medical stuff...:eyes:

LMC should suggest this, since she's already involved with them. You might mention that to her. She said she lost 40 lbs. when she did WW, though I can't imagine where it came from, since I think of her as smaller than me, and I was supposed to gain weight, which I did and I don't like it.:-( I also saw a report on the news, which I obviously watch a lot of, LOL, and it reported that WW is the only weight loss program that actually works...:-)

81. Hey Malta
I responded to your e-mail but just wanted to send you a hug  and tell you that if you have any WW questions or need a pep talk or anything just let me know.

I went through WW three different times but the last time I lost 38 1/2 pounds (notice I want credit for every last 1/2 pound. lol) and I've been maintaining my weight loss for about 11 years now and I've been working for WW for 10 now. If I can do this anyone can, I love food far too much to do anything that would make me feel deprived or miserable. You'll see, you can lead a normal life, eat the things you like (in moderation) and feel a whole lot better.

23. My doc told me that I was diabetic
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 06:02 PM by hippywife
but I've managed to control it with diet and weight loss. Read all your ingredient labels. Avoid HFCS like the plague. Also avoid over processed flours and eat whole grain. Don't ever assume that because a bread label says 100% whole wheat on the front of the package that it is. Most of them say enriched wheat flour, not the same. Enriched flours have been so over processed that they've lost their nutritional value and have had to have things added back in. Go for the ones with 100% stone ground whole wheat. I also stopped drinking anything but water, with and without fresh lemon, and a very occasional iced tea. Don't drink juices, eat the fruit instead. Avoid white potatoes and limit your pastas, eating the whole wheat varieties. Takes a little getting used to but after awhile, it's no biggie. Give yourself a little piece of high cocoa content chocolate now and again as a treat but avoid the pure sugar candies.

After I had done all that, I went back and he was astounded by my numbers. Said that he'd never seen anyone drop their numbers across the board that dramatically without bariatric surgery.

Since you live with a foodie, this should be easy for you. I know you can do it!

I only drink seltzer - no soda. I eat whole wheat - but I will check the labels like you said.

25. Big hugs, and take heart that the weight loss can make a dramatic difference there.
I deal with blood sugar issues with my PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), and have managed to keep almost all of my potential health problems at bay by keeping my carb intake very, very low. It's really not bad at all once you get into the habit.

Walk as much as you can, work slow & steady on that weight loss, and cut the carbs (especially anything "white" or processed).

As far as losing weight, the only way I have managed to lose 26 pounds -- and keep 20 of them off for more than 2 years -- was with acupuncture. See if your health insurance will cover it.

46. I agree about the acupuncture, kept me going from week to week,
though it didn't cure me, when I was pretty ill. My acupuncture doctor was a tremendous support, and he actually talked me into deciding on surgery. And two of my dogs and my beloved cat also had veterinary acupuncture, which only helped them, and I wouldn't put my guys through something that I wouldn't do, myself. My cat would just fall asleep...:-)

Little suggestion: I'm on Omega 3's. Fabulous. Really great way to lose weight and keep it off and feel good.

Thumb through a book called "The Fat Resistance Diet." by Leo Galland. It's good for everyone. You still eat from all the food groups. You just learn which fats and carbs help and which hurt. But you still heat. Really works. Been doing it for years. It resets your natural hormones to let go of weight instead of hording it. It's all done with food: No drugs or suppliments or packaged food. It's totally healthy. It's basically how to live on the typical asian diet here in america.

41. Jesus, I am so sorry, my friend!
I know very well how it is to be unwell, since I was desperately sick for a long time, until my last (third) surgery, but you seem to feel okay, always a good thing. If you're looking for a second opinion, I can recommend my GP at Irongate, who was very kind to me during my last surgery and so I chose him, since my long-time doctor is retiring, and the younger guy addressed things that the other one didn't.

Is there anything that I can do for you? You know that I'm good with dogs and kids and that I cook. ;) Please let me know how you are. I've been where you are and know you'll get through this. Just remember that you're needed and you're loved. BTW, my grandmother's 80-some-year-old friend lowered his cholesterol significantly by eating oatmeal everyday. And little MB might like it with brown sugar, like my Nana used to make for me. Hang in there... :-)

I am hoping we can finally get together soon - the weather is improving. Are you able to go on walks with your foot these days? I have been taking Egypt and Luna on the bike path near the lake - they love it.

Little MB loves oatmeal - in fact she eats it all the time. I am usually on the run so I cook it for her and end up eating breakfast at work - most often yogurt with fruit or a peanut butter sandwich...

70. Hello, my friend. I'm sorry that you're having such health problems.
As I said, I've been there. *sigh*

My next project has to be to get new tires, which I've been putting off since I wasn't driving, but just saw a scary report on the news. Did you know that tires can "go bad," even if they've never been used, if they're more than six years old?!:scared:

And I can walk, these days, though I still have a bandage on my foot. Sometimes it still bothers me, but if I can manage to walk in NYC, I can walk anywhere...:D Jack has wanted to stay out more, lately, so I think he'd enjoy a walk. He's put on weight, too, so could probably use the exercise, as could I, and he sure has the energy! (wish I did...)

The friend I spoke of was a very nice man, a friend of my grandmother's, and he just died last year at the age of 90. He was always going to some spa or Reiki center, or something, and still played tennis. He said that just switching to oatmeal for breakfast decreased his cholesterol dramatically. You could get the instant oatmeal to bring to work, just add hot water...

Feel better soon, my friend!

43. Agree re the high fructose corn syrup. Ditch it.
I lost a few pounds without trying just by eliminating that from my diet, along with aspertame (except for the rare diet coke). I try not to eat refined flour, though I don't really like most whole wheat breads. But HCFS is bad for diabetes, and who knows? Maybe even the cause, in some cases.

54. so you cut out the aspertame too?
I admit I like my coffee light and sweet, and I use Splenda.

I don't really eat much processed food - always use jam that is unsweetened, etc. There is only so much one can eliminate.

:hug::hug:

I picked up my glucometer from his office today. One thing I can say about my doc, he gives me all meds, etc. samples, so I have limited medical expenses. Considering I spend upwards of $450 a month on gas alone, it is a HUGH help.

 Thanks again....

88. I've got several of Jack outside which turned out well that I've been meaning to pass on...
I like this one particularly, reminds me of the ones of Rags in the daisies, used to have my favorite on my bulletin board...:loveya:

And what the vet said was that "he isn't obese," just could "stand to lose a couple of pounds..." x( But he's already twice the size of Meneken, so will never get back to eight pounds.

Could I make a suggestion? Could you concentrate on the most serious issue first... tackle that one, then the next... and so on? When I think of all my problems at once I become very overwhelmed also. You might try it.... maybe it will work for you too! Hope you feel better soon!

90. Fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia here. What are you doing to treat youself?
You can find some strategies here: http://www.immunesupport.com/ I'd also suggest "the eat clean diet" (should address most of the issues you listed) and at least a half hour of exercise every day. Weight training mixed with walking, biking, swimming or yoga works wonders-just start out with a personal trainer who understands fibromyalgia if you can. You'll avoid flare ups if you ease into it.

Here's a  for you.

91. Health is a process
Take it a step at a time.

Work with your doctor. See what you can accomplish with lifestyle changes. A bit at a time.
