Asking for help from DU musicologists
I have my big, annual FUNDAY party scheduled here in Saginaw, Michigan on June 21. Our current project to put twelve hours of music together for the party is underway and here's my problem:
I have 4200 MP3s socked away on my computer. I only need about 120 for the music list, but I'm sure that there is great party music I've never heard before (Christ, I'm 51 and still think ELO is cool). I would appreciate the hell out of it if DUers could recommend one or two great tunes for a party songlist. I may very well have the song(s) you mention on file (especially if it's/they're from before 1990 or so) -- but I'd bet a few worthwhile nominations I've never heard of before will come up.
What do you listen to? What would you like to hear at a party? Give me a couple brilliant suggestions.
John
That's not an idle question -- you're all invited. This will be the 14th incarnation of the party. Many DUers have attended in the past -- ask around for a review. And DUmail me for particulars.

29. Quite literally from seven to 70
The kids (under 18) are gone by 8 pm. The real young uns are gone earlier than that.
John
Thirteen years of doing this and we've never had the cops called yet (which reminds me -- ALWAYS make sure the neighbors are invited).

Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 09:42 PM by 5thGenDemocrat
Here's a dozen I've got tentatively listed:

Canned Heat - Let's Work Together
B52s - Roam
Cheryl Lynn - Got to be Real
Old 97s - King of All of the World
Sweet - Love is Like Oxygen
Queers - Ursula Finally Has Tits
OK Go - Here it Goes Again
Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life
Runaways - Cherry Bomb
Spirit - I Got a Line on You
Savoy Brown - Tell Mama
Slave - Slide

John
Of course, I'm always looking for better suggestions. And some of the numbers aren't dance tunes -- but they'll work good over the course of an afternoon (and I notice there's, like, two songs that are less than ten years old on the list).

'Delirious'-Prince

'Beyond the Sea'-Bobby Darin

'Both Ends Burning'-Roxy Music

'Canibal Papaya'-Shonen Knife

'Rip It Up'-Little Richard

'The Middle'-Jimmy Eat World

'Little Black Egg'-Tarnation

I do appreciate your concern for non-graphic lyrics. The evenings can get pretty rowdy on a FUNDAY, but we go out of our way to see that there's nothing (particularly) objectionable while the kiddies are here.
Thank you for contributing, riverdeep. It's obvious you put some thought into your list, and I appreciate it.

also...
Grand Funk Railroad:
We're an American Band
The Loco-motion (cover)

The Doobie Brothers:
China Grove

I just did a "memorial mix" for my late husband's wake(s) and have a 3 hour list of 60s-70s classics; not all are dance tunes, but many are.

Grand Funk is from Flint, 35 miles south of here. They've always been local legends. If I remember right, both Mark Farner and Michael Moore went to the same high school (Davison HS), albeit several years apart. I know/knew Michael Moore in passing (we worked for different alternative newspapers at the same time).

47. Got both of those
Rare Earth is also kind of famous to Michiganians my age (I think they were the only white band ever signed to Motown Records), and I've been to nine Grateful Dead concerts. It wouldn't be FUNDAY without a Dead set.
John
Which, I guess, is the advantage to being the person putting together the music list.

44. Try my band's songlist:
Click on "Songlist" at http://www.thevibetribe.net. Selections from that list have worked well for weddings, private parties, clubs and casinos.

48. Boy, there's a lot of stuff there
I see you post when your band's out playing around Philadelphia. If I lived several hundred miles closer, I'd love to see you play live. Philadelphia and Boston are the only two major Eastern cities I've never been to.
John
I bookmarked your site. I'm going to need some time to go through it. Thanks for sending it along.

49. Yes, they are and no, I won't
Even with the suggestions that I already have on file, it's educational to read what other people like to hear. Like I said at the beginning, there are 4200 songs on file and about 120-140 will fit into a twelve-hour songlist (figuring for news breaks, commercials, announcements and so on).
Being the programmer is a little like being The Boy in the Bubble. I'm programming by my tastes which, of course, won't be everyone else's tastes. I'd sure like to include a little something for everyone.
John
Probably won't manage to do it, but I'd like to.

Of course, I usually play the German version of 99 Red Balloons, but I usually play David Bowie's "Helden," rather than "Heroes," too.

91. Brave Combo is fabulous!! The musical blender!
I've seen them three times -- the last was at a kid's festival a few weeks ago in Galveston. Some friends of mine are good friends of theirs, so we get in for free when they're around!

Definitely one of the best things to come out of Denton. North Texas State has always had an outstanding music school, as well. (I refuse to call it the University of North Texas.)

82. The fact that you've asked for party tunes and gotten through 81 posts with no one mentioning P-Funk
is fucking criminal.

If you must have only one of their songs, go with "Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (We Want the Funk)." Or maybe "Flashlight."

As for more recent stuff, primate1 was spot-on earlier in the thread -- Justice is awesome. Some of Daft Punk or Chemical Brothers is similarly ass-shaking.

For more-rock, less-dance, I've been pretty big into The Hold Steady recently. They make you want to punch the air! :headbang:

I've got lots of stuff from one incarnation of them or another. One of my biggest disappointments was missing meeting George Clinton by, literally, two minutes when I lived in Grand Rapids.
I am vaguely familiar with Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers (as in I've heard of them) and have never heard of The Hold Steady. I'm make sure to cue some of their stuff up, too.
