1. He's always been one of my favorite guitarists and I am glad that he got to spread his creative
wings but his music from Deep Purple and Rainbow is all I need. I can get that other stuff from Loreena McKennitt!

2. I got it from Fairport Convention...
Candace Night is a far cry from the late Sandy Denny, and you're right...Purple and Rainbow pretty much cover all the bases.

3. Wow, Fairport Convention! That's going back a few years.
It's sad that Sandy Denny died so young. What a beautiful voice!

5. I loved the Dio albums...
...but didn't care for the pop-heavy direction the band took after he left.

Blackmore was a Jimmy Page kind of player. It was all about the riff that drilled its way deep into your brain. "Man On The Silver Mountain," from the first Rainbow album, was basically Rainbow's "Smoke On The Water."

But Ritchie wanted to hear his songs on the radio, so he started writing for the radio, and the music suffered.

"Rainbow Rising," the second album, is the grand mother of all "classic rock" albums. It's a high-water mark for Blackmore AND Dio.

6. I like some of the stuff Dio did with Black Sabbath, and some of his solo stuff.
He's cheesy, sure, but not in an unbearable way.

7. I'm listening to "Neon Knights" from "Heaven & Hell Live" right now...
...and yeah, Dio is a guilty pleasure (for me at least) but how the hell could anyone not like "Man On The Silver Mountain" or "Heaven And Hell" or "Neon Knights?"

I don't listen to Dio 24/7, but when it's Dio time, there's no substitute...

8. I agree completely with your take on Rainbow. After Deep Purple turned into a "sausage factory"
according to Richie. I was really happy when Rainbow's first album came out and was even happier when Rainbow Rising topped that. Unfortunately, as you said, they were never able to match it again. BTW, are you familiar with any of Dio's work before Rainbow? He put out three albums with Elf and they were all good showcases for his voice. Here's a sample: "Shotgun Boogie" is my favorite part of this medley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXTlQHTuh3I

11. OMG - yes! That's absolutely it: Foreigner clone!

God, those were some awful times.

Deep Purple and Rainbow with Dio, though - holy God, those are some of the most perfect rock albums ever assembled.
