Shitty little shitty pop culture question.
Any linguistic relationship between Pwned and Punk'd?

1. They were both invented by people who were too lazy to type things out properly.
That's about the only connection I know of.

6. Punk'd usually refers to an elaborate prank...
Whereas pwned usually refers to someone being bested in some capacity, not necessarily via prank.

As is my understanding, anyway.

3. What I want to know
is how do you pronounce "pwned"?

Punk'd is obvious, obviously.

7. I always thought that pwned was a contraction of punk'd and owned
(At least, to the extent that I thought about it at all - please don't get the impression that leetspeak etymology consumes a significant chunk of my time...:))

10. No linguistic relationship.
Remember that "pwned" is actually a mis-spelling of "owned".

In the world of online gaming, messages between players
are necessarily brief. "Owned" is a shorthand way of saying
"Ha! In your face!" to an opponent you've just killed
or otherwise defeated; when typing with one hand while
playing, it's very common to misspell it "pwned" or "pwn3d".
So common that people began to use it deliberately, to reflect
that particular meaning of the word. (and cuz it looks kewl)

While both words may refer to some humilition of the addressee,
"Pwn3d" refers to someone defeated in a fair test of skill
while "punk'd" refers to the hapless victim of a prank or trap.

11. And why, pray tell, are people typing with one hand?
Until right now, I had no clue whatsoever that "pwned" meant "owned" - none.

Unfrickenreal.

13. Because they're in the middle of playing a video game that requires the use of both hands.
Most games require two hands, to both move and fire.

You have to stop shooting back to send a message in the middle of gameplay;
one hand keeps your player in motion, while the other one types quickly.

If you use BOTH hands to type, your player is sitting motionless for
several seconds, and that's a good way to get your butt shot off.
