Strange yellow ball seen in sky over Richmond

Don't be frightened by that big yellow thing that was spotted briefly in the skies over Richmond just before noon today.

It's called the sun, and even though you haven't seen much of it recently, it's trying to stage a comeback.

But for now, at least, the rainfall that has pounded the region almost constantly for the past three days is going to win a few last battles before retreating.

The National Weather Service is calling for a 50 percent chance of showers this afternoon, with new rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible, before the chance of rain drops to 30 percent tonight.

The weather service says tomorrow will start out cloudy then become -- you guessed it -- downright sunny, with a high near 72 degrees.

Looking ahead, more of that big yellow ball Thursday and Friday with highs in the upper 70s both days.
