Running out of time...
placement agencies and headhunters were falling all over themselves to have me as a candidate. One office had me meet nearly the entire staff. Now, nothing.

I get my last severance check (for one week) on Friday and my insurance is canceled on the 30th.

I'm going stir-crazy at home because I have no idea what I'm packing stuff for. Storage? A cross-country move? Selling and giving away 25 years of my life because I can only take to my parents what will fit in my car? It's so hard not to get discouraged. :(

1. Good luck
with whatever job you decide to take.

Don't worry, believe you will get the dream job, and you will. It has always worked for me.

It sucks, yes.

Keep your head up and go for walks whenever you can. It'll help, really.

Good luck.

5. have you applied directly to places like...
universities? they all have their accounting/finance depts and generally have excellent benefits, even if not always the top salaries. Other good perks, too... access to services and things on campus.

I would assume those jobs would be listed in The Chronicle of Higher Education - and always on human resources sites for particular schools. Did you check out the employment openings at UWisc/Madison? that's a great city and a great U.

10. Thanks sweetie....
I just want a chance to support myself and Lelapin and put a roof over our heads. I know there are hundreds of thousands of people out there in the same situation. It takes your pride, your self-esteem and your self-worth away.

I want a chance to work and to be happy. :(

and when you need it the most.

That's the way life is...

I know you are despairing, but trust me...something good is going to happen. Just keep working it and keep doing what you are doing....

19. Have you checked out:
1) Finance departments of defense contractors ? Does not have to be traditional accounting. They are always looking for financial program administrators, contract pricers, and contract administrators. With your background, you could do these jobs.

2) If it really comes down to the wire, worry about getting the money first, rather than the benefits. Assuming nothing catastrophic happens, you can make do without benefits for a little while. I know it is not the best thought, but if it gets to that point, worry about getting a job, ANY job, that pays you. Perhaps a temporary agency...they are always looking for accountants. You may be able to get your foot in the door that way at a good company, and work towards permanent.

3) Can you set yourself up as a small business doing planning and accounting work? If you can, there are several Employee Benefit Firms that offer insurance to the small business owner by grouping all of these small owners into a "trust" that can offer lower pooled premium rates. Look under "employee benefits" in the yellow pages.

21. I work for a defense contractor - he's right
Check out things like "Business Systems" or "Project Controls." We have scads of those people just at this site, and every contractor has them virtually everywhere.

A quick search for my company for Accounting and Project Controls is pulling up 53 current opening, and we are currently bidding on at least six other projects (though those won't help your current situation of needing a job now). If you're up for moving to Abu Dhabi for a while, there are about 3-4 openings there.

http://www.parsonsjobs.com/

You can search there, if you like. We're not *quite* as slimy as some other places *cough*HalliburtonKBR*cough*.

The company I worked for was bought out by a another firm and just hired a whole new accounting staff here in the Atlanta area a few months ago..

24. That would have been nice
I had no warning at all. I prepared all the financial statements and knew we hadn't sold a property since July, but I didn't think *my* job would have been eliminated, along with two others.

:(
