2. 'cause that's what's stopping me from

being able to get a real job. One that starts and finishes while the sun's up and lets me be home to bully and browbeat the chillun. And allows me to get sick or take a vacation or any number of silly little things.

I know all the rest of it...but I don't know excel and excel's important, I guess. I hate it, but that's prolly 'cause I don't know it very well.

3. Excel's cool.

The beginner stuff isn't too hard to learn, but you want to go systematic at it, whether it's a class or a home-use book. A lot of jobs that use Excel do not require you to become an expert at doing all that it can do, but just understand the basics -- The set of gridlines on a blank spreadsheet are 'cells' and each cell can be set up to contain a formula, text, or whatever, and they can be made longer / shorter, taller/ skinnier, and of course the lines can be made visible or invisible in any manner you want.

"Formulas" are what it make it a nice little calculator with a paper roll, only better. You'll find it handy to add things up for yourself or keep a ledger of your monthly expenses and such.

Just like beginner's algebra, any numbers computed in parentheses will compute themselves inside the parentheses, and whatever you do with them will compute afterwards. If you have taken even beginning jr. high algebra you'll catch on to how to use formulas literally in minutes.

Just thought I'd drop a word of encouragement. I am no math expert and when I say algebra has driven me to tears I do mean literally. But Excel's cool. Just learn a little at a time and practice playing with each thing you learn a bit before you move on.

5. I've found a few online tutorials...

I figure that's how I'll start.

I can do a few things with it...I can create and delete and format the cells, but in the end it seems like so much work -- so I figure I'm not doing it right. There's gotta be an easier way and, by gosh, I'm gonna find it.

And I haven't even tried to fiddle with the math part.

And thank you. The encouragement helps. I'm finding myself rather daunted at just the thought of it.

exel is a really useful tool b/c you can arrange the data in it so many different ways.

I am NOT a person who was ever meant to be an admin. asst. sort of employee... but even I can love excel. If you'd like, send me a pm. I always find learning things like that is always easier when I have a specifc goal for it. so we could make up some project that would actually matter to you.

8. Excel is the coolest thing on earth!

I had a basic understanding of Excel when I started my new job. Being a Marketing Analyst, I LIVE on Excel. I quickly became an "expert" and I love it.

By FAR the best Microsoft program out there and it is powerful as hell. Excell can do ANYTHING. It sometimes even makes me feel warm in my pants like that time a gym class when we had to climb the rope...

11. You can make a video game in excel. Seriously. Direct X can be called from excel.

(Or at least it could be a year or two ago) Cool stuff. Great if you're super fancy and want 3D animated worlds generated from a set of data.

13. I suggest you get the Dummies guide to Excel

I found these books are great for teaching one's self. Plus they tend to be down and dirty quick learning. My suggestion is make sure you have the software, so you can play with it as you read.
