Grass cutting-it is ON! this weekend
After a long wet period here in the mid-Atlantic the grass has gained a bit of an upper hand but this weekend a whole can of whoopass is getting opened up.

The blades are going DOWN :grr:

3. Never quite understood the obsession with the lawn.
And I've never considered a manicured monoculture a thing of beauty. My yard is a functional space for my dogs to run. There are bare patches. Lots of 'em. I don't mind. :) In the front I've got dandelions springing up. I like them. Yesterday we had "lawn care" panhandlers going door-to-door trying to sell their poison; I didn't even open the door, because if I had, I'd have run them off with a pitchfork. I guess I will eventually have to go through the motions of mowing, but that's my only concession to suburban conformity.

6. I hear ya, for real
That's the good way to be too, it's better for the nature and the local animals :headbang:
I have a lawn because we live in a close culdesac full of neat yards, and my husband puts a lot of value into the nice yard bullshyt :P even though I'm the one who takes care of it.
But I've planted lots of native flowers & vines and some fruit trees, to help the local bats and bees and stuff.

I'm posting in this thread because I too am gonna mow, this weekend :headbang: And we're gonna go get a bunch of free mulch! It's a frickin party!

4. I just got done about 30 minutes ago.
Nice and cool this morning, but getting a bit humid. The Back 40 fought back valiantly but, in the end, the grass went down!

7. Last weekend was my second
mowing of the year. Sullied the pretty new shiny virgin lawnmower last weekend. Had to borrow one for the inaugral mowing of the year.

10. Damn! it is. I am going to squeeze in 30 minutes tonight
and try to get a cut on the rest of the front yard tomorrow night.

The Masters are this weekend (rethinking my original post) so Sunday is OUT and Saturday I am going a long-looks like wet- run (12-16 miles)

9. I've mowed six times so far this year
five trips to the landfill with brush and I could mow again today but I'm gonna give it another day. I think I have antique brush left over from katrina and we've lost a few more trees since then. The brush cleanup is a lifelong "hobby."

11. DAYUM!
I finally realized that I need to just get the heavy stuff down a week or so ago. I got a 45 minute session in last week but haven't had time since.

12. Old man rant
This is something that I say that probably tags me as an 'old curmudgeon'

When I was a kid (see that's the first curmudgeon clue) if you needed your lawn mowed (or driveway shoveled for that matter) and couldn't do it yourself it was ridiculously easy to find a teenager able and willing to make a few bucks to mow the lawn. In fact they usually came around asking.

Now it seems you can't find that at all. I'm not even talking about the expense as I'm sure you'd have to paid kids much more these days but fair enough, but, at least in my area you just can not get any kids to do chores like this. You have to go to local handy-man businesses or lawn care businesses and usually have to sign up for the entire season.

 I need a curmudgeon smilie

13. Actually I have a kid in my neighborhood who came knocking on our door a few weeks ago
the same kid and his friend saw me raking leaves a few months ago and they offered to do it for cheap. They did a good job too-bagged them and everything

I haven't seen him recently but they do still exist.

I think I will take him up on it but he wasn't asking enough--$20 naw I'll pay him $30 but he has to use his own mower.

16. Good for him!
I tell me son (every time I have him do some shoveling and perhaps this year some mowing :) ) that I'm training him to take advantage of an obvious gapping market hole that he can use to make money for himself :)

15. Woo! I can't wait.
I love mowing the lawn in the summer. With the size of my lawn, and the terrain, it's always an adventure.

18. I probably could've mowed last weekend
but I've got a part of my yard that's not growing as fast - I wanted it to catch up before I mowed....
