Poll question: Favorite song from TOMMY (the rock opera) by the Who
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 05:38 PM by undisclosedlocation
I'd assume that the same songs are in Tommy the movie and Tommy the Broadway show, but I don't feel inspired to go look them up. I've just had all these songs running through my head for days and was curious how folks would vote. For those who helpfully point out that I'm old, yep.

We're Not Gonna Take It Lyrics

Tommy: Welcome to the Camp,
I guess you all know why we're here.
My name is Tommy
and I became aware this year

If you want to follow me,
you've got to play pinball.
And put in your earplugs
put on your eyeshades
you know where to put the cork

Hey you getting drunk, so sorry!
I've got you sussed.
Hey you smoking Mother Nature!
This is a bust!
Hey hung up old Mr. Normal,
Don't try to gain my trust!
'Cause you ain't gonna follow me any of those ways
Although you think you must

Guests:
We're not gonna take it
We're not gonna take it
We're not gonna take it
We're not gonna take it

We're not gonna take it
Never did and never will
We're not gonna take it
Gonna break it, gonna shake it,
let's forget it better still

Tommy: Now you can't hear me,
your ears are truly sealed.
You can't speak either,
your mouth is filled.
You can't see nothing,
and pinball completes the scene.
Here comes Uncle Ernie to guide you to
Your very own machine.

Guests:
We're not gonna take it
We're not gonna take it
We're not gonna take it
We're not gonna take it

We're not gonna take it
Never did and never will
Don't want no religion
And as far as we can tell
We ain't gonna take you
Never did and never will
We're not gonna take you
We forsake you
Gonna rape you
Let's forget you better still.

Tommy:
See me.
Feel me.
Touch me.
Heal me.

Listening to you,
I get the music.
Gazing at you,
I get the heat.
Following you,
I climb the mountains.
I get excitement at your feet.

Right behind you,
I see the millions.
On you,
I see the glory.
From you,
I get opinions.
From you,
I get the story.

Listening to you,
I get the music.
Gazing at you,
I get the heat.
Following you,
I climb the mountains.
I get excitement at your feet.

Right behind you,
I see the millions.
On you,
I see the glory.
From you,
I get opinions.
From you,
I get the story.

Listening to you,
I get the music.
Gazing at you,
I get the heat.
Following you,
I climb the mountains.
I get excitement at your feet.

(FADE:)
Right behind you,
I see the millions.
On you,
I see the glory.
From you,
I get opinions.
From you,
I get the story.

7. I voted "Other" -- because every goddamned note --
-- is wonderful.

A person I had great respect for years ago worshipped The Who and Tommy was a favorite. It heightened my attention to their music. I "reheard it for the first time" in a Dodge Dart.

A great rock opera by great musicians.

Good post, undisclosedlocation. Thanks.

9. What was that song Ann-Margaret sang in the film version...
Prior to her being deluged by baked beans and chocolate? Ken Russell really overdoes it sometimes on the imagery and allegory. But that scene was so bizarre and over the top I loved it.

:-)

19. "Today it Rained Champagne"
I love that movie, bizarre as it is. Ann-Margret was at her maximal hotness in this flick, and in that scene. I wanted to have sex with her so bad, and I didn't even know what sex was then.

12. A line in Amazing Journey inspired one of my cat's names...
The pregnant stray we found had four kittens: an orange one (liver failure), a black tabby (aneuryism), a solid black male (aneuryism) and a solid black female (still alive).

After we brought all five cats into the house, I'm sitting there playing with the mother and the orange one and singing "deaf, dumb and blind boy, he's in a quiet vibration land, strange as it seems his musical dreams ain't quite so bad."

So we named him Tommy.

A cool little ballad about fanatics.

16. Go To The Mirror Boy
Doctor:
He seems to be completely unreceptive.
The tests I gave him show no sense at all.
His eyes react to light the dials detect it.
He hears but cannot answer to your call.
Tommy:
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.

Doctor:
There is no chance no untried operation.
All hope lies with him and none with me.
Imagine though the shock from isolation.
When he suddenly can hear and speak and see.

Tommy:
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.

Doctor:
His eyes can hear
his ears can see his lips speak
All the time the needles flick and rock.
No machine can give the kind of stimulation,
Needed to remove his inner block.
Go to the mirror boy!
Go to the mirror boy!

Father:
I often wonder what he's feeling.
Has he ever heard a word I've said?
Look at him now in the mirror dreaming What is happening in his head?

Tommy:
Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat
Following you I climb the mountain
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions
On you I see the glory.
From you I get the opinions
From you I get the story.

Father:
What is happening in his head
Ooooh I wish I knew, I wish I knew.

20. Listening to you, I get the music / Gazing at you, I get the heat
I know it's part of the "See me, Feel me" part, but that section still sends chills up my spine. Maybe it's the swelling organ (an old Hammond B-3, from what I could tell), the lyrics, or the passion... These guys knew what they were doing.
