Check out a 'Christian' review of your favorite movie on this site
http://christiananswers.net/spotlight/home.html

I found this as a link from a movie database and started looking around. Not to offend any 'true believers', but this is f'n hysterical. The reviews of the Austin Powers movies had me laughing so hard I almost peed myself. Check it out.

7. ...and on the other side of the aisle
You should check out the Maoist International Movement for their movie reviews as well, if you get a kick out of warped interpretations of popular cinema.

2. I just loved how they could review...
...movies when the reviewer walked out halfway through (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) and not one of the comments called them on it.

I did have to laugh at the review of Mulan. It's about a Chinese girl several hundred years ago and they're bitching because the kid is worshipping her ancestors in a culturally and historically correct (though in a Disneyfied way) manner.

But then, when you're not reviewing movies based on artistic merits but rather based on having a particular axe to grind, the reviews do come across as propaganda.

I found the site hilarious, but very unprofessional.

4. Not THAT Bad
I've seen worse. The main reviewed LIKED Mulan (and it got a "better than average" "morality" rating. There was none of the "Disney supports the 'homosexual agenda'garbage I expected. And they didn't automatically reject anything over a PG rating.

The comments posted by others below the main review WERE often pretty funny and over the top...."Mulan shows a friendly dragon! dragons are allies of Satan!!" BOL. But other people argued back saying the movie (Mulan) WAS appropriate and good for their kids. I'd probably use the site if I had kids and avoid the anti-Harry Potter wackoes. As an adult, however, I wouldn't use it for my own movie viewing.

5. We Catholics were ahead on this.
I'm always excessively entertained by how hard it is locate a movie that the Catholic Church deems suitable for anyone other than "adults, with reeservations." A good many movies are simply deemed "morally objectionable," which is no surprise (and deserved, frankly, by many of the movies, but that's another thread).

Anyway, thanks for the added info and link. THIS COULD BE FUN.

8. magnolia review
I chose this one arbitrarily (it is one of my favorites) and thought it was odd that it got a "Moral Rating" of Extremely Offensive, and then 5 stars for Moviemaking Quality. And a lot of trhe reviewers who were offended still picked out the message of forgiveness. So there's at least some subtlety going on.

16. I think it is a fairly good site.
For people who actually care about such things, at least they can seperate quality from offensive content. I don't see anything wrong with it.

10. And another thing...
check out the SF Gate website for the Day in Pictures. There's a photo of some fat people around a BQ (Greenville, MI) and on it is not meat or vegies but books and videos. Idiots. Don't they know that stuff will get all over the grill and in their lungs. Of course not, they're so stupid even God's rolling his/her eyes.

12. I like the ones where they burn the Potter books.
I wonder where they got all of them. I also wonder if they figured out that Rowling gets her royalty regardless of what they do with the book after buying it.

Reminds me of the Dilbert cartoon where the stupid people Dogbert likes to pick on are picketing in Dil's front yard - and put the pressure on by trying to drink all his water from the garden hose.

I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read this, otherwise I would have spit it out onto my keyboard for laughing! :-)

One of the user comments (in bold, mind you): "Two men kiss on the lips and 2 women do for about 15 seconds." EGADS! :o

Just as long as they don't try to push them on me, as well.

I noticed the balance of comments about Harry Potter were positive.

17. I was actually pleasantly surprised
at how reasonable and intelligent most of the spotlight reviews are (every movie site has ill-informed, bigoted, uneducated contributor reviews - check out the customer reviews on Netflix if you want to hear 'morans' barking sometime). They gave a very high rating to Whale Rider (which I think is the best movie I've seen in years), despite its focus on the Maori religious tradition. And I agreed 100% with their review of the Piano Teacher, which I also found repulsive although superlatively performed.

All in all, most are quite even-handed and fair.

18. The reviews of 'Seabiscuit' and 'Whale Rider' were spot on
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 02:03 PM by sinookas
Those were the two I looked at due to having seen each recently.

Everyone should see Seabiscuit. Whale Rider if you are a patient person, or feeling particularly patient.

Are there people at DU who won't go see them if a Christian site gives them a decent review ? My guess is yes.

I saw little wrong with those reviews.

In the Seabiscuit review, the reviewer actually admits that even Christians today are TOO CYNICAL.

24. taste is always subjective
My personal favorite movie The Princess Bride was favorably reviewed 3 1/2 <whatevers>

Princess Bride, starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright (with appearances from Fred Savage and Peter Falk) is a highly recommended fairytale-romantic comedy.

Having seen only previews of the Austin Powers movies, I would rate them poorly. It's why I didn't see any of them. Not my cuppa.

One doesn't have to be a Christian to not be enamored of Mike Myers.

25. To each their own
Edited on Sat Aug-09-03 04:54 AM by socialdemocrat1981
While it has some viewpoints that quite a few people would disagree with here, to each their own and I think that the merits of this site should be considered as well.

Consider this statement from the editor of the site:
Editor's Note: The Siege has been seen by some to be part of a growing list of films that portray Muslims as radicals. Though the film does make attempt at not portraying all Muslims as radicals, many of us can still be blamed of "guilt by association". In fact, the vast majority of Muslims are not terrorists or extremists and, as followers of Jesus Christ, we should educate ourselves on the truth.
http://christiananswers.net/spotlight/movies/pre2000/i-siege.html

And I'm sure some of a lot of you here would agree with this statement -particularly in light of what Ashcroft has been doing in relation to those of the Islamic faith and Guantanomo Bay and so on

The reviewer missed the point entirely. In this film, Muslims which had nothing to do with terroristic activities were rounded up and put in "camps." Anyone who values religious freedom should admire the actions of the protagonists in decrying this treatment in a country where we have freedom of religion and respect for others' beliefs. That is a HUGE part of this film. I'm sorry you all seemed to miss that.

27. Check out the whackos' comments for "Will and Grace"!

Avoid -- I watched this show the other night and I was appalled. The character Jack (played by an actor who went to my college) especially is bad because he is the "funniest" gay character and is therefore the most appealing to young children. Also, he is played by a handsome young man, ...I fought to suppress my attraction to him. I am a reformed homosexual who is now married to a wonderful woman, and people like me don't need such horrible filth on TV to tempt us back into sin.
--Eric Ellington, age 20

Yup, dear sweet Eric is surely cured of his sinning. :eyes: At least he's age 20 and still confused, I'll be $50 that he'll be divorced by the time he's 25. I pity his 'wife'.
