Drinking the Kool-Aid is a reference to Jonestown, and been opened up to more broadly cover people who let the group think for them. It is selling out and not getting anything for it.

I like Kool-Aid and all its bright, fruity goodness, but it is not healthy, first the sugar or artificial sweetner and then the dye. I feel like crap if I drink it so I don't, I drink water.
