Poll question: Which transmission do you use: Manual or automatic?
Or rather, what type of transmission does your car have? I haven't been in the market for a car for some time, so if there's something else out there, please use "Other" and explain...

8. Automatic, manual is for farm machinery
When I was little I used to drive the tractor a manual 5-speed. It was hard and required a lot of muscle. Same for the lawn mower, but it is easier.

However, I want a car that doesn't involve gear shifting.

10. Yes!
My Chevy Malibu is an automatic, and my VW Passat is a stick. I prefer manual transmissions, but my commute often turns into bumper-to-bumper creep forward traffic, so the auto is a welcome respite from the clutch.

11. I'm driving an automatic for the first time in my life.
I sometimes miss the control of a manual (esp in snow), but it's mostly just a means for me to get from here to there.

I've got a Dodge with one of those Auto Stick transmissions. It's a four-speed automatic, but I can also shift it manually without a clutch.

16. All my cars have had manual transmissions
At first I didn't want to have to learn to drive one, but now I'm glad I did. The only thing I don't like about 'em is getting stuck in a traffic jam--my left foot starts to cramp up pretty quickly when that happens. :-(

23. hehe
I had a Rambler in high school with a 3 on the tree. It took forever, or so it seemed, to get from first to second gear with that thing.;)

A lot of these youngsters today just look at you kind of funny when you mention such things. I was trying to explain a non-synchronized transmission to a kid who works for me the other day. I learned to drive in a '45 Chevy army surplus 2 ton flatbed with a 4 speed non-synchro tranny and a manual two-speed rear axle, so there were two sticks coming up out of the floor. No power steering,no power brakes, hell, it hardly had brakes at all! I just got a bewildered look from him when I was trying to explain double-clutching to shift that old truck and why....

30. We used to call that "3 on the tree."
Thus...

Car Dude #1: "You got a stick?"

Car Dude #2: "Yeah."

Car Dude #1: "Four-on-the-floor or three-on-the-tree?"

And so on...

39. In the US, you mean.
Most cars sold in Europe are manuals. We don't go for automatics except in high-end luxury cars. And I dare say the US is not such an important market for cars, given that you all prefer trucks and SUVs.

27. Five-speed in my car. Auto in my husband's car.
:P He's taken the "old fart" route of an automatic. (He used to drive a Mazda RX-7 and was the one who taught me to drive a five-speed when I was 22.) I prefer my car because it's fun to drive and gets great gas mileage, plus I can control the speed to my liking in a five-speed.
