The hits just keep on coming
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 04:32 PM by lizziegrace
I found out at 4:00pm that my position was being eliminated. The economy's tanking and I was laid off today.

I have no idea what I'm going to do. Right now I can afford to move somewhere if the economy's good and I can find a job. I'm ready to give up on Ohio.

Say a prayer, send vibes and good thoughts my way. I need them.

3. Sorry to hear.
The DC area is usually pretty good. The govt doesn't go out of business. What kind of work are you looking for?
Check Monster and Dice. CSC is always hiring technical people.

7. I'm an accountant
no CPA certification. Broad experience but really not an expert in any particular area. That's been my biggest hurdle. Also, I was told by a headhunter that my age could be an issue as well.

I believe you're around the same age as I am. Shouldn't matter and if you craft your resume right they won't know.

40. Your age could be an issue in another way.
If younger people with less seniority than you were retained, maybe a call to the EEOC would be in order.

16. I know you're tired. But I know you won't give up.
Some of us are just put in that position over and over and over again.

Turn those parts of you to steel that you need to protect yourself. Guard those parts of you that you need to keep soft.

Lean on the friends who can carry part of your load, and give yourself permission to sit and rest when you need it.

41. Thank you all for your support
I have 5 weeks severance and medical through April.

To answer a previous poster, they retained a 23 year old male who just graduated from college. He started working in July and I trained him. I'm a 47 year old female. Also, they kept the controller who makes 6 figures.

I'm still stunned, still angry. New offices are being built and the fireplace mantel was bought through a well-known international auction house and shipped to the US. I could work 3 years on what that cost.

I hope this all means I'll find something better but how many times can you keep picking yourself up and going on?

I'm so tired...

42. I'm really not surprised about them keeping the younger person
whom I am sure they are paying less. I had a job, while I was NOT laid off, the company seemed to like to push around the senior people in such a way that they became miserable enough to quit and then replace them with people who make half of what the senior people did. They also avoided paying unemployment/severance that way....:grr:

Seemonkee is right about jobs in the DC area. Not only is this area mostly recession proof but the salaries are much higher here...My younger sister is a bookkeeper here and makes a pretty decent salary.
If you do find something interesting here and get an interview, PM me and I'll help you out anyway necessary!
Good luck with your search lizziegrace!:pals:

It hurts me to see you having to endure all of this. You, of all people, don't deserve this. And, having witnessed my mother going through this a few years ago and seeing how much it affected her, I have some understanding of how you must be feeling. It just seems so unfair what you've been dealing with the past few years and especially what just happened.

Rest assured that my deepest and sincerest thoughts, best wishes, positive vibes and whatever else good I can extend to you are with you. I know you'll come through this -you're a strong person -and I sincerely hope that life will get better for you very soon. I wish you all the good luck in the world:hug:

I've identified with you many times on here . . single parent, #of moves, etc.
For me it always seems that just when I think I cannot go thru another "thing" something changes.
For today my job is secure but I know that could change in a heartbeat. It seems to be the most
stable thing in my life right now. I have to keep believing that my daughter and I will be ok no matter what.
Sounds simplistic but sometimes it's all I can go on.

52. That sucks, lizziegrace. But I do believe that, one year from now, you'll look back and realize
that the reason this happened was to force you to leave that job that you hated and find something that's
more fulfilling and less deadening to your soul. It's so scary right now, but - as I told you before - I'm gonna keep
my fingers, my eyes and my legs crossed till something better comes along.

And, yes, as you said, it'll be hard for me to get anywhere like that; so I'll just sit here and keep Omm-ing until
something good happens to you. It's so damned overdue!!!!!!
