How do you delete stuff from Classic Ipod?

When I have my Ipod plugged into my computer, I can see the list of songs on the Ipod, but they are all greyed out, and it won't let me delete anything. Can someone tell me how to do this?

1. Select the iPod in iTunes, and hit "Manually manage music and movies"
The check box is something to that effect. You probably have it so that it automatically syncs whatever's in your iTunes Library to your iPod, so the only way to delete stuff from your iPod is to also delete it from your library.
