My doctor is an ass.
Forgive me. I am upset and must rant.

I was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition by this specialist I've been seeing. This has been really difficult to deal with, as I'm also contending with anxiety issues (which are often set off by the pain). He put me on these pills, and I was concerned that they might be producing a potentially dangerous side effect. I called the nurse, who checked with the doctor. She calls back and informs me that the doctor will no longer see me as a patient, because my condition makes me too emotional.

What's worse, I was told to discontinue all medication, when one of them needs to be gradually withdrawn! The pharmacist was rather shocked when I called to confirm the safety of just dropping the pills, not to mention outraged by how I'd been treated.

So, even though the guy was an asshole, I've allowed it to get me upset. Makes me feel like I really am crazy.

2. contact your state's grievance committee for doctor licensing.
And file a complaint.
Sounds like you got two complaints there -- dropping you as a patient and telling you the wrong thing about your meds.

And yes I am a lawyer but I don't play one on TV.

3. You might want to consider alternative medicine
You might find it works better for you.

5. problem
There's no regulation there. Mixing alt treatments and pharmaceuticals can be deadly. And there is NO database for keeping track of that stuff as there is with mainstream medicine. At least Doctors have to be licensed, and can be disciplined. Alt docs aren't.

6. Well you can often find a DO, that is into alternative medicine
as well. Then you can get the best of both worlds.

13. no, no, no
Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs) are regulated by the same medical boards as MDs. They are no different from MDs who might "be into" whatever the bunkum pseudoscience of the day is.

10. A better course IMO
Would be to find an actual doctor who takes the role of "doctor" seriously.

The problem with alternative medicine is that most of it doesn't actually work if there's anything actually wrong with you.

And if it does happen to work, then chances are it's actual medicne, rather than "alternative."

4. Don't let that doctor upset you
This here:"doctor will no longer see me as a patient, because my condition makes me too emotional."
Is clearly a violation of the Hypocratic Oath. As is not telling you about gradual withdrawal.
Complain to the licensing board. It will make you feel better, AND by making your complaints public, you have a chance of not having others go through this. Doctor's like this are a danger. I have a stong feeling though, there are others who have been mistreated as well.
FYI, if you are concerned about drug interactions, you can actually ask your pharmacist. That's part of their job is to keep track of that sort of thing.
Sorry you went through this.

9. Thanks for the kind posts, all.
I've managed to calm myself down from being so upset. Just caught me a little off-guard. :)

I'll have to find another specialist to help me, that's all. It bothers me that my medical records probably note me now as a basket case, though. I mean, I don't deny that I have anxiety issues (which are also being addressed), but dumping me after diagnosing me and putting me on pills?

Ah well. It does me no good to obsess. Just need to take a breather and move on.

11. If your anxiety is neurochemical in nature...
Then there's no reason to be embarrassed about it or to diss yourself as a basket case. If you had a broken leg, you wouldn't belittle that injury, would you?

12. Report him to your insurance company also
They don't want asshole docs, too many complaints cost them money.

14. I don't have insurance, which I suspect is part of why he booted me.
No insurance, and there's no surgical cure for my issue. It's permanent. When he looks at me, he doesn't see dollar signs.
