I use baking soda (not baking powder!!) as deodorant and it works AMAZINGLY well. I use a small "quarter sized" pile in each palm and apply directly to pit.

Pit may require pre-moistening.

The only caveat is that as the day goes by, the baking soda dissolves into your sweat, your sweat gets in your shirt, your shirt dries and you may find a white precipitate ring under your arm. This doesn't happen unless I use too much. I have not had any clothes permanently discolored.
