Medical ethics question
Would it be an ethical violation for a psychiatrist to date the mother of a patient? I'm thinking yeah. Which is really too bad because my daughter's new psychiatrist is completely adorable and while it may be wishful thinking that he was flirting with me I think I'm going to maintain that fantasy in a sad old lady kind of way.

1. I'm guessing it would be unethical
Which is too bad, really, because you'd have an adorable date, the shrink would have an adorable date, and your daughter would have a lifetime trump card in the "Oh yeah? Well guess what creepy thing my mom did!" game. Win-win-win...

:)

Seein' on how you're all hawt and stuff.

But, yeah — I don't think that'd be ethical.

4. APA Ethics guidelines
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 11:55 PM by drmeow
which I expect are essentially the same as the American Psychiatric Association's guidelines say definitely unethical - but your fantasies are not :)

(a) A multiple relationship occurs when a psychologist is in a professional role with a person and (1) at the same time is in another role with the same person, (2) at the same time is in a relationship with a person closely associated with or related to the person with whom the psychologist has the professional relationship, or (3) promises to enter into another relationship in the future with the person or a person closely associated with or related to the person.

A psychologist refrains from entering into a multiple relationship if the multiple relationship could reasonably be expected to impair the psychologist's objectivity, competence, or effectiveness in performing his or her functions as a psychologist, or otherwise risks exploitation or harm to the person with whom the professional relationship exists.

5. I'm happy to be able to ethically fantasize :)
As I said, he was adorable and I'm a lonely old romantic who needs to find the fantasy where I can get it. I would never in a bRazillion years think it would actually happen.
