Best antihero.
There are a lot of them in popular media. From Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns to the Punisher.

1. Batman.
Nobody can beat Batman.

Except Bane that one time. But that was a lucky shot.

5. Elric of Melnibone. No contest.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elric

He ends up killing his best friend and the woman he loves, feeding their souls to his sword, Stormbringer, just before the world ends and the sword claims him too.

Hmmm, maybe Stormbringer should the ultimate antihero, now that I think of it.

24. It is a touch douchey, but...
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 04:23 PM by Kutjara
...in it's defense, the sword didn't name itself. So the douchebaggery must be lain at the door of whoever decided to give the weapon such an overblown name. At the end, after slaying Elric and stealing his soul, Stormbringer transforms into a nameless jet-black humanoid figure, just in time to leap into the void as the world dissolves into a mist of nothingness. Not a bad way to make an exit. Very few other antiheros destroy an entire cosmos in their spare time.

58. Well, of course Moorcock wrote lyrics for the band Hawkwind,...
...but quite a few other "progressive rock" types borrowed ideas from his books. When they weren't borrowing from Tolkien, of course.

7. Jaime Lannister (minor spoiler)
His first significant act in the story is to throw a small child from a castle window, as the child has caught him (Jaime) fucking his (yes, Jaime's) sister, who happens to be the queen. And he somehow winds up being likable and honorable in his own way, even when the reader really wants to loathe him (meanwhile, his decidedly good and honorable traveling companion is absolutely insufferable.)

Actually ASOIAF is thick with antiheroes.

57. I'd say Tyrion counts as an antihero too.
Just less so than Jaime. Mind you, he has much better reasons for being an antihero than his big brother.

P.S. A: Why do you think Brienne's insufferable? B: That's not really a minor spoiler.

20. No way
Boba Fett is the source of the stormtrooper clones, who can't shoot anything shaped like a human.

Plus, he's a George Lucas creation, and that rules him out by definition.

Boba is the only unaltered clone. Which is why he is bad-ass, and the stormtroopers tend to suck a bit.

22. News for both of you
It was optioned by Universal less than two years ago.

Of course, they'll fuck it up. They always do. They'll hire someone like Keanu, Ben or Matt and turn GF into some kind of traditional hero.

The explosions will be terrific, though. Hollywood loves explosions.

And then millions of people will think that they read the novel just like they did after watching Dune or I Robot.

I haven't seen the network version, which I assume is pretty cleaned up, but the whole premise is morbid as hell. Michael C. Hall does a fantastic job. He was so good as David on "Six Feet Under", and he really makes Dexter a believable character.

I could name others, but Bateman sticks out as a good recent example. For all his bigotry, not to mention his taste for savage murder, I found myself seriously envying the guy's lifestyle. I mean, spending hundreds of dollars a night on dinner? Jeebus!

The best scene from the movie (Take it away, Huey!):
