One of my cats is not putting any weight on his back leg.
:(

There is no lump that I can feel. No cut or wound. There is no swelling. It doesn't seem tender anywhere. He'll let me poke and rub anyplace along his leg and foot. I can't find anything wrong.

But he won't put any weight on that leg, so obviously something is wrong.

I just called and left a message for my vet. But they won't call me back until tomorrow. I think I'm staying home from work and finding a way to get Gray to the vet. :(

1. This happened to my Monty a few months ago
He's almost 13 and has walked a little stiffly for a few years, but was limping badly in late December. The vet thought he had some sort of infection and gave him antibiotics. Those seemed to cause vomiting, so the vet advised me to stop them and just observe and take his temperature, as it was somewhat elevated. I just kept Monty isolated in a spare bedroom for a few days so he'd have his food and litter box close by. I started him on some Cosequin (glucosamine for cats), and he started doing much better. He is now running around like a much younger cat. I really haven't given him the Cosequin for weeks - I don't think that was what was helping him. He rested for a while and did better. I did put him on a heating pad and gently massaged his legs when I could.

Best of luck - I know you're worrying about Gray. I hope all goes well.

2. I hope it's that simple for Gray too.
He's only 9 years old, we think. But he's a rescue so I'm always concerned about old injuries that I don't know about that might not have healed well and come back to cause problems in later years.

3. Arthritis
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 10:10 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
I have a client who has a dog that is in love with me- poor hound has a hind leg she won't walk on. It's age and arthritis.

It's the same with me- bad feet, bad knees (one fake knee), hip going bad- I'm sure you know how that kind of thing goes...

'Scuse me. I'm goin' back under the table for some more 'nip.

4. He might have just sprained it.
One of mine, my LARGE Milo, started limping one day. I took him to the vet, they couldn't find anything, and in another day or two he seemed to be OK. Vet thought he'd injured it slightly )twisted or sprained it), which is quite possible because he likes to sleep on top of the refrigerator, but when dinner is served he jumps right to the floor. He weighs about 15 lbs. so he might have landed wrong and wrenched his shoulder a bit. If Gray does a lot of jumping around it could be something like that. Cats aren't always... catlike.

8. He doesn't jump, but he does wrestle with his brother.
So that's a posibility.

I'm supposed to be going away this weekend. I'm thinking about cancelling so I can stay home and watch him.

9. I think he's 9 years old.
He was already an adult when I got him, so it's hard to know for sure.

11. I hope this fixes itself
or gets fixed with minimal help from a vet.

What happened that you needed that? I hope it's not serious. Are you okay?

10. My dog is going through that too.
We took her to the vet, and he gave us some anti-inflammatories, and she's gotten a lot better.

She also didn't yelp or anything, but the vet said she had a slight inflammation of the joint on her right hind leg. Hopefully, that's all that's wrong with your cat, and the vet will be able to help out.

12. Thank you.
I'm panicking a bit less because of the responses on this thread. Which, of course, is what I was hoping.

If it's just inflamation of some kind, hopefully it's temporary and not something that's going to recur.

14. Very thoroughly.
There's nothing wrong with the pads, or between his toes. And I don't see anything in the fur around the pads.

When he sits it seems like he's not bending his leg and hip the right way. It seems like the problem is in his hip.
